About Asleep At The Wheel

The formation of the band dates back to 1969 when a group of friends joined forces and decided to make their own compositions which would help revive the American roots music landscape. Shortly following the union, Asleep at the Wheel got the opportunity to perform the opening act for Alice Cooper and Hot tuna in Washington. At this time many musicians of the country were utilizing their musical expressions to project their stance on the ongoing conflicts in Southeast Asia. The western swingers helped break this mold of political music by bringing back the joy and freshness of the root genre. Soon they moved to California and performed a number of small scale shows which earned them considerable attention, particularly from within the music circles/industry.
The big break for Asleep at the Wheel came when their name was mentioned by Van Morrison during an interview with Rolling Stones. The informal reference to the band opened new horizons for the emerging musicians and within a short span of time record offers began pouring in and The Wheel started rolling fast. The band made their entry into the professional music world with the 1973 release of the album ‘Comin’ Right At Ya’. The following year saw the release of the music band’s self titled second album. It also consisted of a cover song of Louis Jordon’s ‘Choo Choo Ch’Boogie’ which was also their first single to make it to the country music countdowns. The third record on the part of the country stars was produced in 1975 under the title ‘Texas Gold’. It consisted of their hit single ‘The Letter That Johnny Walker Read’. The song also stood amongst the top ten country hits of the time.
Having gone through an inactive phase during the early 80s, Ray Benson and the band launched their comeback with an album entitled ‘10’. It also comprised of contributions by the legendary fiddle player, Johnny Gimble. The album won them their second Grammy. The country stars continued collect more Grammys by winning yet another one of the prestigious honor for their next album ‘Western Standard Time’. During the early 90s, Asleep at the Wheel along with numerous guest musicians produced a special tribute album under the self explanatory title ‘A Tribute to the Music of Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys’. It was received with immense appreciation on both commercial as well as critical fronts. Towards the end of the millennium, the band came up with another tribute album to Bob Willis named ‘Ride with Bob’. It proved to be an even bigger hit than the previous tribute record. The band won two Grammys for this album, one for ‘Best Package Design’ while the other for ‘Best Country Instrumental’.
The last decade (2000-2010) saw several hit albums and songs by Asleep at the Wheel.
