Yo-Yo Ma is an American virtuoso and cellist, who has gained much prominence as a cellist of modern age, and is known as the most talented on the classical front. The artist has received multiple accolades including several Grammies, National Medal of Arts and most recently, Presidential Medal of Freedom. He usually performs with his Silk Road Ensemble that aims to bring together musicians from historical and national diversities, all of which have been connected to the Silk Road.

About Yo Yo Ma

He created the Silk Road Connect that initially included middle school children. His key performance instrument has been the cello that he has named Petunia, which was built in 1733 by Domenico Montagnana. He has played live all over the world including such notable appearances as those in the Winter Olympics of 2002. He has also appeared on many TV shows like The Colbert Report, Mister Rogers' Neighborhood and Sesame Street, among several others.  In 2009, he was appointed by President Barack Obama to serve on his Committee on Arts and Humanities. Ma's music has been featured on the documentary Baseball and Jews: An American Love Story. Yo-Yo Ma began playing the violin at a very young age and settled on the cello by the time he was merely four. Yo-Yo Ma's distinct playing style has been noted to comprise of an eclectic repertoire that is quite uncommon among classical musicians. He has recorded many typical standard classical tunes but his versatility can be best felt in his recording featuring Baroque pieces that use period instruments such as American bluegrass music, traditional Chinese melodies as well as the tangos by renowned Argentinean musician Astor Piazzolla. He has also incorporated the music of modern minimalist such as Philip Glass in recordings like his 2002 work called Naqoyqatsi.
The artist has gained recognition for his rich, smooth tone along with his immense virtuosity that can be best seen in such recordings as the Twenty-fourth Caprice by Niccolo Paganini for solo violin. Over the years, he has released many recordings, the most recent among which include The Goat Rodeo Sessions, Cinema Paradiso, Songs of Joy and Peace, Appassionato, Yo-Yo Ma Playing Ennio Morricone, The Dvorak Album, Obrigado Brazil Live, Vivaldi's Cello, Obrigado Brazil, Paris- La Belle Epoque, Silk Road Ensemble, Yo-Yo Ma Plays Music of John Williams, Heartland: the Appalachian Anthology, Inspired by Bach and many more.
Yo-Yo Ma performed at the inaugural ceremony for President Obama in January 2009, in which he played alongside clarinet-player Anthony McGill, pianist Gabriela Montero and violinist Itzhak Perlman. He played the world premiere of Self Comes to Mind by Bruce Adolphe for a solo cello along with two percussionists at NYC's American Museum for Natural History. In 2011, he performed with the well-known American dancer Charles Riley in China and the USA at the China-U.S. Forum Arts and Culture.
