About Leif Ove Andsnes

Hailed as one of the few leading orchestras of the world, Chicago Symphony Orchestra laid its foundation in 1891. Since then, the orchestra has become a platform for high quality performances that are in demand not just in Chicago, but in all of the world renowned music capitals. The orchestra was established by the leading American conductor, Theodore Thomas who was a music pioneer of that time period. Thomas established the orchestra with an aim to make it one of the finest and high quality orchestras of the nation. CSO gave its first theatre performance in the October of 1891. Till his death in 1905, Thomas served as the music director of the orchestra.
Every year, CSO performs more than 150 concerts through the collaboration of renowned guest artists and conductors from across the world. The orchestra also performs regularly at the Ravinia Festival every summer. In the past few years, the orchestra has also started its educational programs which involve more than 200,000 residents of Chicago annually. Since 1971, when CSO made its first tour of Europe led by Sir Georg Solti, the orchestra has successfully completed 39 tours. Most recently, in the beginning of 2013, the orchestra toured Asia for the seventh time. The orchestra has taken its unforgettable symphonies to almost every corner of the world from Russia to Canada and Australia.
Nine music directors have led the Chicago Symphony Orchestra until 2010, when Ricardo Muti, the acclaimed Italian conductor became the music director of the orchestra. With the start of Muti’s directorship, a new era in the history of CSO started which continues till this day. With a vision to increase the community involvement and produce richer music compositions, Ricardo Muti has taken the orchestra to newer heights. For his services, Muti has been awarded two Grammy Awards and a number of international honors like the title of Knight Commander of the British Empire, German Verdienstkreuz, Order of Friendship and many more.
This year the orchestra will be joined by Leif Ove Andsnes, the celebrated pianist from Norway, to recreate the Beethoven’s world for the audience. Ove Andsnes is an active recording artist and a famed pianist who made his debut in 1987. As an avid chamber musician, Andsnes recitals and concertos are hailed all over the world. He was called as “a pianist of magisterial elegance, power, and insight” by The New York Times. In 2012, Andsnes served as the Music Director of the Ojai Music Festival.
Andsnes has given performances at many prestigious festivals like Risor Festival of Chamber Music, Mostly Mozart Festival and Last Night of the Porms.  He is a receiver of distinguished honors like Peer Gynt Prize, Commander of the Royal Norwegian Order of St. Olav, Gilmore Artist Award and the Royal Philharmonic Society’s Instrumentalist Award.
