About The Jungle Book

The protagonist of The Jungle Book is a young boy named Mowgli, who is an orphan, raised by animals in the thick jungles of India. The theme of the story revolves around giving guidelines for life and moral teachings. Kipling used the relationship between animals and humans  to give lessons on friendship, betrayal, loyalty, honesty and family bonding. Kipling’s The Jungle Book was taken to cinema in 1967. The movie earned a lot of fame and got great reviews from the critics. Now it is being adapted into a musical by the  Tony Award winner, Mary Zimmerman. Mary Zimmerman is a well known playwright and theater director, from Nebraska. She is appointed as Manilow Resident Director at the Albert Ivor Goodman Theater of Chicago. She won the Tony Award for her amazing work on the play Metamorphoses by Ovid.  She has also received more than 20 Joseph Jefferson Awards.

Now Mary Zimmerman has lent her services for the adaptation of The Jungle Book as a musical. She has written the script for the musical and has directed it herself as well. To achieve perfection in the musical the director and her creative team travelled to India. They researched modern and traditional music, decorations and apparels there to ensure accurate details for the musical. Renowned music director Doug Peck has composed the music of the play. Two intense workshops were held by the music department to analyze the songs for the musicals. The creative team of the play wanted to fuse songs from the film, its sequels and some original compositions, so that a unique sound could be created for the production. Academy Award winner and the celebrated composer Richard Sherman has contributed his songs to the production. To add even more precision to the musical the famous choreographer Christopher Gattelli has coordinated the dance sequences of the production. The choreographer is an award winning artist and is known for the details he adds to his projects.
