About The Lumineers

The story of The Lumineers started in the early part of the 2000’s. Wesley Schultz from Ramsey, New Jersey was an artist who loved to draw. He was also a very avid music enthusiast. His artistic partner during those days was his best friend Joshua Fraites. Together the two best friends spent countless hours drawing sketches before tragedy struck in 2002. Joshua suddenly passed away. Jeremiah Fraites, Joshua’s brother was into music as well. Wesley and Jeremiah turned to music to provide them with an escape route from the grief of Joshua’s passing away. Both started record and rehearse together and shortly afterwards decided to take the next step and turn professional. They began their career by starting off performing in and around New York. They were generating some headlines in the local music scene but not enough to generate enough finances to live in an expensive place like New York. They decided to re-locate to Denver, Colorado.

The Lumineers had to start off afresh and they needed a new face on the roster to help them reach for the stars. As soon as they reached Denver, the two posted an ad for a cellist. Among the very first people to respond to that advertisement turned out to be Neyla Pekarek. She was from Denver herself and had classical training as a cellist. Wesley and Jeremiah were so impressed with her skills that they hired her and she became a permanent member of the band. Together the three of them began playing and composing tracks. Their earliest gigs in Denver were at the Meadowlark. It was a club where the most promising names in the city’s song writing community came together every Tuesday for open mic sessions. To expand the group’s repertoire Neyla learnt how to play a piano and a mandolin. She also started to polish the raw talent Wesley and Jeremiah both had. All the hard work soon began to pay off as The Lumineers started to develop their own unique style of music and sound.

They recorded a self-titled EP in the year 2011 and booked a tour for themselves to promote it. That road trip turned out to be very instrumental in the group’s quest to generate a solid fanbase. Their popularity started to soar and by them time 2012 came around they were such a big act that they were selling-out arena all across the country. The independent record label signed them up on a one record agreement and officially released their album The Lumineers on 3rd April, 2012. It turned out to be a big hit the moment it hit the music stores with it grabbing the top spot on the Billboard’s Folk charts and the number two place on the India Charts. About two months later on 15th June, 2012 they released Ho Hey, a song from the album and it turned out to be another big hit. It has sold well over five hundred thousand copies and spent eight weeks at the top of the commercial Triple A radio list.

The Lumineers have well and truly arrived. A project that started off between two friends has now gone on to become a sensation in every sense of the word. The hard word the group members have put in through the years have started to pay off and by the look of things this is just the beginning of a journey that will take them to the pinnacle.
