About Patti Smith

Patti Smith was born in Chicago and was brought up at Deptfort Township, New Jersey. She was brought up as Jehovah’s Witness, and for the strong religious background she had, her education included Bible as an important constituent. Nevertheless, she found organized religion too confining in her teens, and left it, as is evident from her songs like Gloria. As she left her college, Robert Mapplethorpe came to her life, whom she often refers to as the artist of her life. Robert was a photographer, and had a strong romantic relationship with Smith, although it did not work out well owing to their poverty. Later, she discovered her innate talent of singing and songwriting, and took up music as a profession. Right from the beginning, she was interested in rock music, and for some time even remained the lead singer for Blue Oyster Cult.

After some time of singing with other groups, Patti Smith organized her own band in 1974. Her band included Ivan Kral on bass, Lenny Kaye on guitars, Richard Sohl on piano and Jay Dee Daugherty on drums. The band’s first single Hey Joe / Piss Factory was recorded in 1974, and was financed by Sam Wagstaff. After getting some initial acceptance in the music industry for their first few songs, the band recorded its first studio album Horses in 1975. This album is considered one of the earliest to be recorded in history of punk rock, and contributed a great deal in popularity of this genre. It was a fusion of spoken poetry and punk rock music. The cover image was designed by Mapplethorpe that has become signature images for the band now. The popularity graph rose further as Patti Smith toured across Europe and the United States. She released her second album Radio Ethiopia and while performing at a promotional tour for this album, she suffered an accident and broke several of her neck vertebrae after falling from a high stage. While recovering from her injuries, she had time to think about her career, her singing style and music that is reflected in the songs that followed. After recovery, she recorded two more albums, one of which was Easter that contained a song that became her identity later, with the title Because the Night.

In early 1980’s, Patti Smith took some days off from her singing career after getting married to Detroit’s MC5 guitarist Fred Sonic Smith, and had a son named Jackson and a daughter named Jesse. She settled in Detroit and did not produce much music in those days, giving only one album named Dream of Life in 1988. In 1994 Fred Smith died of a heart attack, and old friends convinced Patti Smith to get back to music. She shifted back to New York, and re-established her connection with the music industry in late 1990’s to release Gone Again. Ever since, the artist has been actively involved in rock music and has released many albums that have claimed worldwide recognition.

Patti Smith is a kind hearted person who loves to work for change in the society. She has contributed to albums produced to fight AIDS in the world, and supports Green Party. She has also been against US offensive against Iraq and believes it was against humanity. Patti Smith Tickets undoubtedly enable you to watch this great artist perform, who has proven herself to be one of the greatest rock singers of all times.
