About Modest Mouse

The Formation of Modest Mouse

Modest Mouse formed in 1992 in a suburb of Seattle known as Issaquah, Washington. Lead singer and guitarist Isaac Brock was a teenager working at a local family video store when he met future bassist Eric Judy. The two later met drummer Jeremiah Green at a metal show in Seattle and the three of them talked about making music together.

The name Modest Mouse was derived from “The Mark on the Wall,” a story by Virginia Woolf. The passage reads: "I wish I could hit upon a pleasant track of thought, a track indirectly reflecting credit upon myself, for those are the pleasantest thoughts, and very frequent even in the minds of modest, mouse-colored people, who believe genuinely that they dislike to hear their own praises."

The band was collectively influenced by bands like the Pixies, Talking Heads, Pavement, and XTC. They spent a considerable amount of time rehearsing, writing, and recording music on their own until they eventually signed with a small town indie label, K Records.

In 1994, Modest Mouse released their first EP called Blue Cadet-3, Do You Connect? which was recorded at Calvin Johnson's Dub Narcotic Studios. In the early days, the band recorded not just EP’s but also stand alone songs. One such song was a single called ‘Broke’ which was recorded at Moon Studios in Olympia, Washington by Steve Wold (also known as the bluesman Seasick Steve). They were also working on recording an album called Sad Sappy Sucker. This album was never released due to constant delays, and was forgotten for many years until it was officially released in 2001.

Building a Name for Themselves

Before Modest Mouse gained mainstream success and exposure, they had to effectively showcase their material and talent to the world. They did this by touring extensively at many venues across the nation, including DIY/punk venues.

The band eventually changed record labels to Up Records. Under this label, Modes Mouse released two full length studio albums, as well as a compilation of songs that had been recorded during their time at Mood Studios. One of these releases included the EP This is a Long Drive for Someone with Nothing to Think About, which was released in 1996. This was followed by the release of Interstate 8.

Breakthrough Success

In 1997, Modest Mouse released the album The Lonesome Crowded West. This album was a breakthrough success for the band and catapulted them to fame. In fact, the album was so popular that it gained Modest Mouse a cult like following and came to be considered as a defining album of the 90s indie-rock wave of music.

After this time, Modest Mouse went through several different line-up changes, with band members leaving, and new ones being added.

In 2004, the band released Good News for People Who Love Bad News, an album which only took a couple of months to be certified Platinum. The album was so popular that it was even nominated for a Grammy for Best Alternative Music Album of the year, and the single ‘Float On’ was nominated for Best Rock Song.

They followed this album up with We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank in 2007 and Strangers to Ourselves in 2015.
