About Deer Tick

This American Indie folk band is led by a John McCauley, who is a Providence Rhode Island native. John McCauley began a love affair with alternative folk music from early childhood and the rest ladies and gentlemen is history. Working hard throughout his teens, he learned electric bass, practicing rigorously until he attained perfection. The genres with which Deer tick mucks around include country, folks and blues. The whole gamut of affair began as a solo project by John McCauley in the new millennium, 2004. At the tender age nineteen McCauley he started off touring the whole of United States. The man who provided McCauley a helping hand in starting up his touring career was Bredon Massei, and his efforts did not go vain as during the tour McCauley released three cassettes and numerous CD-Rs in DIY fashion. Eventually the whole project evolved into what the world today comes to call, the Deer tick.
One whole year passed by, and during all this time Deer tick was touring extensively, however all the hard work paid off because when he made his return to home land, Providence, he had a number of hits including, “Ashamed,” “Dirty Dishes”, “Art Isn’t Real” tucked  neatly under his belt. These smash hit singles along with his new found self confidence, catapulted him in the world of music and soon made it big for himself. Receiving rave reviews, comparisons were drawn between his work and works of other pioneering artists and acts such as, Uncle Tupelo, Bright Eyes and Modest Mouse.
Right from the start the act called Deer tick has performed in various venues, with a different line up every time. McMauley happens to be the only constant member in all the live acts. He is only official member of Deer tick. Currently two other members of the band who are now officially taken as members are Bassist Christopher Dale Ryan and then it’s Dennis Ryan. Currently the band is a five member band. The other two members are, Ian O’Neil and Rob Crowell. There are several other musicians who have shared stage space with Deer Tick, names include, Johnny Corndawg, Chris Paddock, Diego Perez and Liz Izenberg.
Coming to the band’s studio albums, we shall start off with the one they debuted with. The debut album was called, War Elephant. It released in 2007 by Feow! Records. The album was re released by Partisan Records, due to disputes on royalty payments between the band and Record label. The album had the smash hit “Dirty Dishes” in it which was a huge success. Next came their album Born On Flag Day. The album released in 2009. The album was a success as the Rolling Stones proclaimed it the “Country-Rock break-through of the Year.” Soon word of their outstanding on stage charisma spread across borders and that’s how the Deer tick toured to Europe, and shared stage space with Dawes, Jenny Lewis and Neko Case. Their latest studio album is by the name “The Black Dirt Sessions.”
The name of the band was inspired by a deer tick. It was when McCauley was hiking in the state forest near Bloomington once and by the end of it he realized he had a deer tick on his head it was then and there that he decided to name his band, Deer tick. If you love the lo-fi alternative rock sound of Los Lobos, Elephant Micah and others, then you are going to love this Ritchie Valens' wannabe Deer Tick. This one-man act has been performing since birth and hasn't stopped since, making his concert tickets after just two decades seem like a veteran performance.
