The journey of the band began in 1980. Young Mark McLaughlin, who adopted the famed punk handle known as Mark Arm, took the initiative of forming the band that was called Mr. Epp and the Calculations. This band was created with a bunch of high school friends coming from Seattle’s suburb called Bellevue. Mr. Epp did not really get the opportunity of playing in a live show until 1981. The performed an opening act for a music group called Student Nurse. Soon enough the band started developing a fan following. In 1982, they released a 7th EP. The following year with the addition of a second guitarist, Steve Turner, the band successfully released their debut cassette titled as Live As All Get Out. The band broke up in 1984.
In 1981, Mark Arm and Steve Turner became good friends and started playing for other bands too. After the band broke up, Turner and Arm began to play again in collaboration with Alex Vincent, the drummer. Arm decided to concentrate more on the vocals and set aside his guitar. That is when, Turner requested the previous Ducky Boys guitarist, Stone Gossard to become a part of the band. Hence, the band called Green River came into existence. Their debut album called Rehab Doll came out in 1988. Soon rising tensions led to the breakup of Green River.
Turner and Arm kept creating music on the side. They made another band called Thrown Ups, but that did not work either. Turner soon realized that the key to success for a band that they would create would be to first rehearse the songs that they created before playing it out to a live audience. He began to fervently work on some fresh material with Arm as well as the drummer, Dan Peters. Soon they were seen hooking up with Matt Lukin the bassist and forming a new band that would eventually become Mudhoney. The name of the band was inspired by a Russ Meyer movie. The four members of the band took their experiences from the bands that they had created and been a part of earlier and blended in the elements of punk metal as well as ‘60s garage rock swagger and created amazing music.
The first single of the band, "Touch Me I’m Sick" came out in 1988 and was released by Sub Pop records. An EP titled as Superfuzz Bigmuff followed the release of their single. The music of Mudhoney was a hit in the indie circuit of Seattle. They took their first North American tour and then a British tour with the Sonic Youth band. They soon found themselves to be critically acclaimed with the UK rock press. They gained instant success in Europe and were known to be the newfound heroes of the underground scene of rock prior to the release of their first full-length album that was titled as Mudhoney and was released in 1989.
The band has since then continued to create absolutely rocking music and performing in some of the most electrifying live concerts. The energetic stage performances of the group leave their audiences singing and dancing to their tunes. There is never a dull moment in a Mudhoney live music extravaganza.
