However, his struggles didn’t let him deviate from his first love, music. Clapton glimpsed his future when he saw Jerry Lee Lewis for the first time on television. He found his early inspiration in Lewis’s explosive performance and he was immediately attracted to the blues and American R&B. At the age of fourteen, Eric Clapton received his first guitar from his grandparents and the artist owes his success to them. Besides supporting his talent, they also played a big part in igniting his interest in music. Raised in a musical household, his grandmother was a pianist while his mother and uncle had been associated with bands as well. In 1961 Clapton enrolled in Kingston College of Art and was forced to leave after a year due to his lack of interest in studies. He spent all his waking hours playing and listening to blues.
He began exploring the roots of rock in American blues and mastered guitar playing through his proficient improvisations. Eric Clapton initially started performing in clubs and was briefly associated with a band called Roosters. The early 60s saw the legend become the most talked about guitarist on the R&B pub circuit. He joined "The Yardbirds" in 1963 and produced sensational music with them for almost two years. During his time with the band, Clapton earned the nickname, "Slowhand" because of his fierce string-bending that often broke his guitar strings. Amidst slow claps the icon would fix the strings and then resume his rocking performance. In 1965 Eric Clapton joined the group, "The Bluesbreakers" and through his amazing gift earned his careers second nickname, "God". After disengaging himself from the group, Clapton joined hands with the blues-rock band, Cream. With the phenomenal musician in their side, the band earned a lot of commercial success and they were named among the leading artists of that era.
The powerful trio produced rocking tracks like, "Sunshine of Your Life", "White Room" and "Crossroads". With every composition, Eric Clapton showed his true potential and the experimentation as well as variation he brought to his music was simply spellbinding. Following Cream’s dismemberment, Clapton along with Steve Winwood, Ginger Baker and Rick Grech formed the first rock super-group called Blind Faith. By this time Clapton who was already cemented as rock’s premier guitarist, got elevated to superstar status. Through his work the artist not only earned himself international acclaim but also accolades from his fellow musicians. In 1970 Eric Clapton embarked on his solo career and debuted with the self-titled album, "Eric Clapton".
He has produced a plethora of solo albums which include multi-platinum like, "Slowhand", "Journeyman", "From The Cradle" as well as "Riding with the King". Over the years the music maestro has been presented with numerous awards and honors. He remains the only artist in the music history to have been inducted in the Rock n` Roll Hall of Fame three times, individually as well as with a band. In 2006 Grammy presented the legend with Lifetime Achievement Award. In his on-going career, Clapton has been entertaining the fans with his live shows and his guitar playing completely mesmerizes the audiences. His concerts are a sold-out event, as people come from all over the country to listen to the rock-star live.
