The musical itself is based upon the best selling novel, Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, a Gregory Maguire work of fiction released in 1995 and telling the story of The Wizard of Oz as seen in the movie but from the witches side within the land of the Wizard of Oz. Wicked focuses on two witches; Elphaba the green skinned witch and Glinda the popular and beautiful blonde witch. These two witches then go on to be the Wicked Witch of the West as well as the Good Witch of the North with the musical itself following the story of the struggle between the two witches, their rivalry, their friendship and reaction to the corrupt government of the Wizard of Oz. The story itself starts before that of The Wizard of Oz and continues on.

Wicked is a musical that is a production of Universal Pictures and directed by Joe Mantello. It debuted on Broadway’s Gershwin Theatre in 2003 after a successful tryout at the Curran Theatre in San Francisco. It soon became very successful resulting in not one but five American productions, two smashing tours all over the US, a spectacular production on London’s West End that lasted five long years and international productions in Germany, Australia and Japan. When it comes to awards, Wicked has won three Tony Awards and ten Tony Award nominations, six different Drama Desk Awards, one Laurence Olivier Award and even one Grammy Award. It has also made box office records all over the world; it currently holds the record as the musical with the Largest West End Opening, achieving a hundred thousand in sales in the first hour only, a figure that makes this musical a must see via Wicked Austin TX Tickets.
