Everybody Rejoice – The Wiz Announces Revival

Presenting an urban version of the acclaimed novel "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz," The Wiz premiered with an all-African American cast in 1975, a trend that continues even today. Helmed by some of the top directors in the field, the musical radiates energy, spirit, and magic. The original Broadway production was directed by Geoffrey Holder, with Charles H. Coleman as the music director. The premiere, as well as the 1,672 performances that followed, featured an ensemble cast, including Tiger Haynes, Hinton Battle, Ted Ross, Stephanie Mills, Mabel King, Clarice Taylor, Andre De Shields, Dee Dee Bridgewater, and Tasha Thomas.

The Wiz centers on Dorothy, an anxious and ambitious young girl who dreams of traveling around the world. Living on a farm in Kansas, a tornado transports her to the magical land of munchkins and witches. A yellow brick road leads her all the way to the Emerald City as she hopes to find the Wizard of Oz who can help her get back to her town. During this exciting journey, she meets the Tin Man, Scarecrow, and the Cowardly Lion. Along with some other friends, she takes on the Wicked Witch of the West. After numerous adventures, The Wiz ends with the simple message: there's no place like home.

The Wiz Live – What to Expect

Tickets for the musical production of The Wiz are available for its multiple shows around the country. The Muny in St. Louis recently announced a limited run of The Wiz, which was met with a warm response from the audience. The production is directed by Denis Jones, a Tony Award nominee for Holiday Inn, and the choreography is by Camille A. Brown of Once On This Island fame. Nathan Lee Graham plays the role of Wiz and has already impressed everyone with his powerful vocals and effortless performance.

Jared Grimes, considered one of the talented young theater artists, will be bringing his magic to The Muny as Scarecrow. Mykal Kilgore has stepped in as the Lion, having previously nailed the role of Annas in Jesus Christ Superstar. James T. Lane plays the Tin Man.

Jones is being lauded for his seamless direction, working in sync with the music director Darryl Archibald. The Wiz includes the original songs by Charlie Smalls, such as “Ease on Down the Road”, “Everybody Rejoice/A Brand New Day” and “Home”.

In October, The Wiz will head to the Sarofim Hall at The Hobby Center in Houston, where performances will take place from October 23 to November 4.

From infectious beats to power ballads, The Wiz has many exciting moments that give the revival a strong start. The scenic design and stunning costumes add to the overall appeal of the show and enhance the performances.
