The Waverly Gallery: A Masterpiece by Kenneth Lonergan
The Waverly Gallery is a theatrical masterpiece which is created by the famous American film director, screenwriter and playwright, Kenneth Lonergan. He is best known for writing and directing popular Hollywood flicks like, ‘Manchester by the Sea,’ ‘You Can Count On Me’ and ‘Margaret.’ The first film from the list won him an Academy Award and a BAFTA Award for, ‘Best Original Screenplay.’ He is also the mastermind behind many famous plays including, ‘This Is Our Youth,’ ‘Lobby Hero,’ ‘The Starry Messenger’ and ‘Hold On to Me Darling.’
Kenneth Lonergan started working on The Waverly Gallery during the 1990s. It is considered a memory play in which the protagonist narrates the story drawn from the character’s memory. The term, ‘memory play’ was first coined by Thomas Lanier “Tennessee” Williams III who used it while describing his play, ‘The Glass Menagerie.’
The Waverly Gallery premiered at the Williamstown Theatre Festival where it ran from August 11 - 22, 1999. This production of the play featured the two-time Emmy winning actress, Anna Eileen Herbert. However, due to her health issues, she was replaced by the Academy Award winner for, ‘Best Actress,’ Joanne Woodward for the final four performances.
Off-Broadway Production
The Waverly Gallery received a great response for its premiere. As a result of that, Kenneth Lonergan decided to move the play to Off-Broadway. It opened Off-Broadway on March 22, 2000 at the Promenade Theater. The show was directed by the eight-time Tony nominated stage and television director, Scott Ellis who is known for working in famous musicals including, ‘She Loves Me,’ ‘On the Twentieth Century’ and ‘The Boys from Syracuse.’ This show featured Josh Hamilton as Daniel and Eileen Heckart as Gladys Green. The show concluded on May 21, 2000.
The Off-Broadway production of The Waverly Gallery became a huge hit mainly due to its mesmerizing performances. Heckart did a great job in the show and was honored with a Drama Desk Award for, ‘Outstanding Actress.’ She also won the Lucille Lortel Award and the Drama League Award.
Debuting on Broadway
After a successful Off-Broadway run, The Waverly Gallery debuted on Broadway at the John Golden Theatre in New York City on September 25, 2018 in previews. It officially premiered on October 25, 2018 and featured the Tony winner for, ‘Best Actress in a Play,’ Joan Allen as Ellen, the Academy Award nominated actor, Lucas Hedges as Daniel.
It also starred the immensely popular actress, director and comedienne, Elaine May as Gladys who returned to Broadway after fifty years. She has also been nominated twice for the Academy Award. The show is directed by Lila Neugebauer who has previously worked in plays like, ‘Mary Page Marlowe,’ ‘Edward Albee’s at Home at the Zoo,’ ‘The Wolves’ and ‘The Aliens.’
Becoming a Critical Hit
The Waverly Gallery has been received well by the critics. It has generated positive response from famous publications including, The New York Times, The Washington Post, Chicago Tribune, Time Out, The Hollywood Reporter, Broadway News and The Guardian. The Wall Street Journal also described the show as, “A harrowingly honest, yet humorous, group portrait.”
