The Music Man is a spectacular musical that debuted in 1957 and was an instant success, winning five Tony Awards and a Grammy Award for its cast album. Due to its popularity, it has been revived many times and has been made into a movie twice: once in 1962 as a full-length feature and in 2003 as a made-for-TV movie. It has also become popular with theatre companies, school, and college theatre performances. The Music Man's book, music, and lyrics are the work of Meredith Willson, and the musical is based on a story co-written by Meredith Willson and Franklin Lacey.
This sensational music has a captivating plot and story behind it that is incredibly moving. It features an unusual and unsuspecting main character, Harold Hill, who is a con man. He goes to different towns pretending to be an organizer of boy bands and then sells various instruments and uniforms used by boy bands to people in the town. He then quickly leaves town with the money, leaving no goods or broken goods behind. However, this con man who cheats others soon finds that his story intersects with that of Marian, a librarian and a piano teacher in another city. This librarian has a younger brother who is afraid of socializing with people because of his lisp.
Harold Hill then comes to this city and helps the librarian's brother overcome his fear of meeting with other people. Marian, the female librarian, then falls in love with him as she sees through the mask the con man wears. This love is reciprocated; Harold also falls in love with the librarian and even risks being caught by the authorities due to his unlawful behavior. This remarkable story conveys the various emotions in life through an unlikely character, a con man, but this is what makes it very different from a fairy tale and more realistic. This lifelike musical is the perfect show to watch for something that reflects life in today's world and a life that is filled with mistakes but that also has a chance at redemption and finding true love. The musical has run around one and a half thousand performances since its debut fifty years ago. It has since then become a renowned musical and a popular one that is performed by many theatrical companies all over the world. It is also popular with theatergoers and is the subject of much discussion in the world of theater.
The musical's story is inspired by the creator's childhood experiences in Iowa City. The Music Man's songs are also sensational hits, with one such song being "Ya Got Trouble". The musical has had around forty songs written for it, out of which around twenty are part of its original score. The first Broadway production had Kermit Bloomgarden as the producer, Morton DaCosta as the director, and Onna White as the choreographer. The original cast of this spectacular musical was made up of Robert Preston acting the role of Harold Hill, Barbara Cook playing the role of Marian, and Eddie Hodges as the character Winthrop.
This first release not only bagged five Tony Awards, it was also awarded with a Drama Critics Circle Award as well as a Grammy Award. Since then, the musical has been recreated many times and translated into other languages, such as a Chinese version showcased at the Central Opera Theatre in Beijing. It has seen well over fifteen hundred performances, and some of the other awards this amazing musical has won include a Theatre World Award, eight Tony Award nominations in 2000 added to the original five, and eight Drama Desk Award nominations in 2000.
