About The Nutcracker

In 1892, a unique two-act ballet with choreography by Lev Ivanov and Marius Petipa (with accompanying score by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky) was first performed at the Imperial Mariinsky Theatre in Saint Petersburg. Since then, The Nutcracker has become one of the most loved pieces of work in all of performing arts.

In particular, Tchaikovsky’s 20-minute suite captured the imagination of the audience unlike anything ever before. Over time, it became the legendary Russian composer’s most famous piece of work. A distinct feature of the score was its use of the celesta which is a kind of struck idiophone operated through an attached keyboard.

The complete Nutcracker production has been performed by various ballet companies around the world but primarily in North America. While it has been a fans’ favorite for over a century, the show’s popularity skyrocketed after the 1960s. In North America, it has almost become a permanent fixture during the festive holiday period in recent years. So much so that close to 40% of the total annual ticket revenue of major ballet companies in the United States comes from performances of The Nutcracker.

Plot

From time to time, different production teams working on The Nutcracker have taken some creative license to play around with the story. However, the plot normally revolves around a little girl Clara who falls asleep on Christmas Eve after a party at her home.

In her dream (perhaps it’s a lot more than just a dream), she is transported to an incredible world where all the toys come to life. Her beloved Nutcracker, which had been broken during the party by one of her friends, is among the resurrected life-size toys.

The evil Mouse King goes after the Nutcracker but his efforts are thwarted by Clara. With the immediate danger to his life averted thanks to Clara, the Nutcracker turns into a Prince who then defends his savior from the Mouse King’s wrath.
