Date & Time
Based on a fin de siecle play by Frank Wedekind, Spring Awakening is a rock-musical adaptation that is as daring, intense and controversial as the play was thought to be when it was first staged about a hundred years ago. Wedekind's 1891 work is set in Germany and explores the dynamics between pubescent children, their parents and their teachers, as these youth enter adulthood, stumbling into the yet unchartered territory of physical maturity. Originally written in German, the play exposes the taboos or uncomfortable truths surrounding the attitudes of the society towards adolescent knowledge and experience of sexuality. The contemporary rendition of the play is every bit as startling as the original, with Book for stage and Lyrics written by Steven Sater and Music by Duncan Sheik. In 2006, Spring Awakening debuted off-Broadway, and a few months later on Broadway at the Eugene O' Neil theater. The response was highly favorable and the production received stellar reviews.

Whereas Wedekind's play had been banned in Germany because it included the inappropriate aspects of sexuality such as masturbation, abortion, rape, and child molestation along with the ever-taboo topic of suicide, the modern musical holds massive appeal for contemporary theater-goers precisely because the play delves into the landmine of psychologically complex, dark aspects of sexual discovery that are seldom discussed in all the gory details.
The music for Spring Awakening is masterfully composed and selected so as to ground the play in contemporary reality. The score employs folk-infused rock with a tinge of alternative rock. Directed by Michael Mayer and choreographed by Bill T. Jones, Spring Awakening the musical has earned a myriad of distinctions. Awards include a total of eleven Tony nominations, out of which it won eight, consisting of awards for direction and featured actor. The musical won the coveted Grammy for Best Musical Show Album in addition to Tony Awards for Best Musical, Best Book and Best Score, plus a plethora of other prestigious theater awards such as the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Musical, Outstanding Music, Outstanding Lyrics, the Outer Critics Award for Outstanding Musical and Outstanding Score.
Spring Awakening is gaining popularity on a global scale. The U.S national tour of Spring Awakening opened with performances in San Diego, California in summer 2008, and was followed closely by the European premiere taking place in Karlstad, Sweden the same year. International performances of Spring Awakening, some of which are translations (Hungarian, Swedish and other languages) are being staged currently and have been scheduled for the next couple of years. These include performances in London, Tokyo, Vienna, and countries as diverse as Brazil, Philippine, Australia and South Korea.
In the brief time since the play opened, song numbers such as "Mama Who Bore Me," " The word of Your Body," "The Bitch of Living," "I Believe," " Touch Me," and "The Song of Purple Summer" have already become incredibly popular. Spring Awakening deserves every bit of the celebrity it is receiving. The makers of this new musical have rejuvenated a thought-provoking (if disturbing) modern classic, using superb music and choreography.
