The San Diego Opera is a renowned opera company located in the fabulous city of San Diego, California. It is a member of the national organization, OPERA America, and began staging breathtaking performances back in 1950. The San Diego Opera was founded by the San Francisco Opera, from San Francisco, as an opera company to perform its productions in San Diego. It soon evolved into much more than that, and in 1965, performed its first production independently, fifteen years after its founding. This was La Boheme, and it has been staged many times since then.
The first director of the San Diego Opera was Walter Herbert, who led the company from 1965 until he passed away in 1975. The next general director of the opera was Tito Capobianco. He would lead the company to a loftier position, starting the prestigious annual Verdi Festival. In 1983, Ian Campbell became the general director of this fabulous opera company, and has lead it to greater heights.
The San Diego Opera ’s resident conductor is Karen Keltner and its principal guest conductor is Eduardo Muller. The San Diego Symphony and its musicians perform as the pit orchestra for the performances staged by this Californian opera company.

This is a large list that includes Ferruccio Furlanetto, Denyce Graves, Luciano Pavarotti, Beverly Sills, Richard Bonynge, Joan Sutherland, Richard Leech, Renée Fleming, Plácido Domingo, Jane Eaglen, Jerry Hadley, Richard Margison, Vivica Genaux, James Westman, Isabel Bayrakdarian, and Carol Vaness.
A number of famous productions have also been staged, including the World Premieres of operas such as La Loca by Gian Carlo Menotti, The Conquistador by Myron Fink and Medea by Alva Henderson. US Premieres of operas such as The Young Lord by Hanz Werner Henze, Rapaccini’s Daughter by Daniel Catan, Giuletta e Romeo by Ricardo Zandonai and Gwendoline by Emmanuel Chabrier.
Several notable events have also been organized by this opera company from San Diego, Most notable amongst these are the farewell performance of the iconic Beverly Stills alongside Joan Sutherland in the opera, Die Fledermaus and The Magic Flute, a Zandra Rhodes production. It has also staged the West Coast Premieres of operas such as The Love for Three Oranges by Sergei Prokofiev and Giuseppe Verdi’s I Lombardi and Giovanna d’Arco.
