Paul Taylor Dance Company, formed in 1954 by Paul Taylor, the famous choreographer of 20th century, is a contemporary dance company. It is one of the oldest touring companies of the modern American dance which has performed in more than 500 different cities of 62 countries. Half of each performance season is however spent in touring different cities of America. The famous dancers and choreographers that have emerged from the Paul Taylor Dance Company include names of Twyla Tharp, Laura Dean, Amy Marshall, David Parsons, Dan Wagoner, Christopher Gillis, Elizabeth Keen, Senta Driver and Lila York. What had then started with just five other dancers and Paul himself now consists of more than 150 talented and experienced dancers. In 1963, the company was joined by Twyla Tharp who left it just after two years when he formed a dance company of her own. Christopher Gillis, who joined in 1976, remained with the company till his death in 1993. Bettie de Jong who joined Paul in 1962 remained with him for almost 35 years as the Rehearsal Director. She was the most notable presence on the stage and was also the Paul’s favorite dancing partner. She left the company in 1985 upon successfully finishing her active dancing career. Today, the company is under the supervision of Paul who is the last living member of the second generation of the America’s modern dance art. Paul, the living legend and the name behind the success and brilliancy of the company, is one of the greatest choreographers in the world. Born in Wilkinsburg in 1930, Paul’s childhood wasn’t a very happy one as he had to suffer loneliness and separation from the parents very often. On the basis of swimming and painting, he got a chance to attend the Syracuse University on scholarship. However, upon discovering the dance, Paul decided to take up the dance classes and soon got transferred to the Juilliard School. He won the scholarship for the American Dance Festival in 1952 where his talent was noticed by Martha Graham who invited him to join his dance company. Paul has also danced for some great choreographers including George Balanchine and Merce Cunningham. It was in 1954 that he first assembled a small company, the Paul Taylor Dance Company of today, of dancer and began his career as a choreographer.
