Catherine Johnson, a British playwright wrote the world renowned stage musical, Mamma Mia. The musical is based on the songs of a Swedish disco/dance/pop band ABBA. The group was internationally popular in 1972-1982 and topped the charts time and again in Europe. Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson (former members of the band) were the composers for the show. In addition to them, Anni Frid Lyngstad was involved later in the production (financially) for the development of the show.Mamma Mia was the production of Judy Craymer. In 1983, she met with Ulvaeus and Andersson when they were working on Chess (a musical) with Tim Rice the lyricist. Craymer officially asked Catherine to write the book for the musical Mamma Mia in 1997. Phyllida Lloyd came on board in 1998 as the director of the show. The musical opened in 1999 at the Prince Edward Theatre in the West End. It was then transferred to Prince of Wales Theatre in 2004, and then again to Novello Theatre in 2012. The original cast of the show included Hilton McRae, Siobhan McCarthy, Lisa Stokke with director Phyllida Lloyd and choreographer Anthony Van Laast.
