Mamma Mia! is the brainchild of producer Judy Craymer and premiered at the West End’s Prince Edward Theatre on April 6th, 1999. Judy met Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson, the original members of the group ABBA in 1983 and gave them the idea of taking their music to the theaters. The concept worked perfectly as Mamma Mia! received unprecedented success as soon as it made its debut.
The musical made its US debut in San Francisco at the Orpheum Theatre on November 17, 2000. It made its way to Broadway’s Winter Garden Theatre on October 18, 2001. Mamma Mia! is now the ninth longest-running Broadway show after surpassing Rent on March 6th, 2014. It is also the longest-running jukebox musical in Broadway history. It has been played in more than 40 countries in 6 continents across the globe to immense acclaim.
Mamma Mia! has won its fair share of awards as well to cement its place among the most successful and popular plays of its time. It has bagged one Laurence Oliver Award and one Theatre World Award. It has also been nominated for five Tony Awards and three Drama Desk Awards. Mamma Mia! also won the 2003 Touring Broadway Award for the “Best Musical Score.”
The musical has also surpassed the original Broadway runs of The King And I, The Sound Of Music and the Damn Yankees with over 1,500 performances. It is now on tour once again, so book your Mamma Mia! Detroit tickets and watch the latest production of this wonderful play live.
