Ten years have passed since Christine has been away from the Phantom living supposedly a happy life with her husband Raoul and son Gustave. The Phantom has located her and invited her to perform for him by hiding his personality behind that of some anonymous Mr. Y. Christine has accepted the offer and arrived at New York to work for Coney Island. Raoul gets angry at the strange reception they receive in New York and leaves his wife and kid alone for the night. Once Christine puts Gustave to sleep, Phantom shows up and together they recollect their memories from the night they spent 10 years ago "Beneath a Moonless Sky". Meanwhile Gustave wakes up screaming and has his first introduction to the Phantom.

Later in the morning when Meg Giry learns that Christine will be the lead singer for the Opera, she gets jealous and plots a plan to harm her. Meanwhile the Phantom hears Gustave plays certain melody on piano and develops a feeling that Gustave is his son. Later Christine confirms it. Somehow Raoul learns that their guest is the Phantom who still is in love with Christine. Now it is settled between Meg and the Phantom that if Christine will sing for the show, he will let Raoul and Christine leave for good otherwise Raoul has to no longer exist between him and Christine. The Phantom, despite his dark and violent sides, is loved by the audience and watching Christine leave with Raoul in The Phantom of Opera was a real shock for the audience.
