Lord of the dance musical is a creation of the creative mind of Michael Flatley. Flatley was born in Chicago to Irish parents in 1958. This adept step dancer has created waves all over the world with his sensational musical for years. Flately’s love for dance started at a very early age of 11 years. He practiced so hard that he beat all Europeans residents in All-Ireland World Championship for dancing. Flatley is not only a proficient dancer but a star flautist, boxer and owner of a dance school. He has created a number of dance performances including Lord of the Dance, Riverdance and Celtic Tiger and Feet of Flames.
Lord of the dance was created by Flatley in collaboration with Ronan Hardiman. Ronan is an Irish composer and he has given music for all musical creations of Michael Flatley. Other musical compositions of Ronan Hardiman have supported record holding movies like My Friend Joe and Men figure skating during 2002 Olympics. His famous albums are Anthem, Celtic Classics 1, Feet of Flames, Lord of the Dance, Celtic Classics 2, Solas and Celtic Tiger Live.
Lord of the dance is performed by a very large group of dancers with Michael Flatley as the main lead. It started when Michael broke up with the team of Riverdance because he wanted some thing beyond the conventional that would step out of the traditional theaters and reach out the people sitting in the arenas. After six month of contemplation, Michael finally came up with the sensational current of dance, rhythm and music which termed out as Lord of the dance.
Lord of the Dance is a two Act musical performance. The theme of Lord of the dance is based on a traditional Irish folk lore. In Act 1 the dances that are performed are in this sequence: the show opens with Cry of the Celts, Siuil a Ruin and Celtic Dream. Then a fight burst out between The Warriors. Gypsy comes later with Strings of Fire. And the Act 1 ends at Breakout, Warlords and The Lord of the Dance. In Act 2 the dance performances follow this sequences; starting with Fiery Nights the show stars The Lament, Siamsa, Our Wedding Day and Stolen Kiss. Then comes a Nightmare, The Duel and Victory that end at Planet Ireland.
The story goes on when evil tries to take over Planet Ireland. Good, brave and pious Lord of the dance comes to save Planet Ireland from the evil. The whole story revolves around their fight and the conflicts of the spiritual characters and earthly beings. Evil main character in the musical is called the dark lord "Don Dorcha". Lord of the dance musical is filled with symbolic meanings. The evil in this performance is "lust" whereas the good lord is a symbol of love and truthfulness. The female lead of this musical is Saoirse who fights against the evil Morrighan and saves Lord of the dance from her temptations.
Lord of the Dance was performed for the first time in Dublin in 1996. From that year onwards, Lord of the dance has been spreading its magic all over the world. The dance group has the honor of performing at the Oscar show in 1997. In 1999, they performed at Disney World. That year, so many Lord Of The Dance Tickets were sold, that Disney called them back to perform in summer 2000. They also performed at Disney Paris in the following years of 2001 and 2002.
Because of its popular demand, the troupe of Lord of the Dance has been split in two groups. The first group performs in Europe and the second group performs in US. Michael Flatley himself had left the show to perform in his other creation Celtic Tiger but in 2010 he returned to head the team of Lord of the dance after a performance in which both troupes of the band performed together. Michael is still performing for Lord of the Dance.
Other lead dancers for the show are Bernadette Flynn who plays the character of the Irish Cailín named Saoirse. Saoirse is the good character that saves Lord of the Dance from the temptations of bad Temptress, Morrighan. Gillian Norris plays the character of Morrighan. Michael himself acts as Lord of the Dance and Daire Nolan stars as the evil dark lord, Don Dorcha. A very important character of the musical is a little spirit that helps Lord of the Dance to fight against Don Dorchs. This little spirit is performed by Helen Egan.
