The Lion King is the extravagant musical based on the multi-award winning 1994 film The Lion King. It opened in July 1997 in Minneapolis, Minnesota at the Orpheum Theater to raving reviews before it premiered on Broadway in October the same year. It has been produced by Disney Theatrical. The musical features actors in animal costumes and giant puppets. The musical traces the struggle of Simba, a lion prince born to Mufasa the King. After Mufasa is treacherously murdered by his brother Scar, Simba is forced to flee the jungle and makes new friends Timon the meerkat and Pumbaa the warthog. Samba, with his childhood friend Nala the lioness and his new friends, reclaims the throne that was taken away from his family.
