Without a doubt, Legally Blonde is a modern-day fairy tale of a different kind that has grabbed the attention of many. We have seen Reese Witherspoon saunter into Harvard and graduate in full glory of her pink-colored skirts. The character of Elle Woods has not only given us plenty of reasons to laugh out loud, but also helped reassess the perception of blondes as a whole. Legally Blonde has turned blondes from bimbos to bombshells. The hit flick starring Reese Witherspoon has been hailed as one of the best comedies of its time, and now the story has taken Broadway by storm! The Ivy League champion, Elle Woods, is the main character taken from Amanda Brown's book entitled Legally Blonde. After making a mighty successful appearance on the big screen, it is time for Elle Woods to show off her skills in theatre!
The theatre-goers were eagerly awaiting the theatrical adaptation of the show, which is why, as soon as Legally Blonde hit the theatres, it became a massive hit. Since the musical was created several years after the release of Reese Witherspoon's hit movie of the same name, the show did not need any introductions or any elaborate promotion campaigns. And for exactly that reason, the musical did not fail to impress the critics as well as the fans once it premiered. The show grabbed the attention of many and was nominated for several awards, including seven nominations for the 61st Tony Award and no less than ten nominations for the 2007 Drama Desk Awards, such as Outstanding Musical, Outstanding Music, Outstanding Choreography, Outstanding Lyrics, and several others. Even though the show won none of the above-mentioned awards, getting nominated in so many categories alone is enough of an honor for a fresh tale of a perky little girl.
The story of the show begins exactly as shown in the movie. Elle Woods is piqued to hear the news of her long-standing ex-boyfriend and his departure for Harvard. Determined to win her boyfriend back, she enrolls at Harvard Law School. Upon reaching the college, she is devastated to hear that not only has her boyfriend moved on, but he has also found a new love interest who may not be as prim as Elle, but rather has a head for law. And that is when our dear old sorority princess hatches up a plan to engross herself in studies and make the most of her time at Harvard, while still trying her best to win her man over. Somehow she lands the case of Brooke Wyndham, the exercise queen imprisoned for the ostensible murder of her husband. What happens next is for you to see for yourself!
Legally Blonde has been hailed as a delightful new show after its pre-Broadway tryouts which premiered in San Francisco. The show finally opened at the Broadway's Palace Theatre in 2007, where Bailey Hanks played the role of Elle Woods. The reality TV program which consisted of the auditions for the role of Elle Woods on Broadway was even aired for television. At the end of the auditions, Hanks was selected as the winner, who then played the role for several months until the production closed down.
The production has been a complete success. The proof of it can be seen in the form of several awards won by the show, such as the Helen Hayes Awards, three Touring Broadway Awards, and an Actors' Equity Association's Advisory Committee on Chorus Affairs Award for Outstanding Broadway Chorus. The show is currently on a tour across the US, which means if you missed it the first time, you can catch it again by grabbing Legally Blonde tickets as soon as possible, as they are going fast!
