Watching an opera is certainly a symbol of style and class. For all the opera lovers, La Traviata is a must-watch show. This three-act show has been entertaining numerous people from all over the world. With its superb libretto and amazing musical compositions, La Traviata is one of the most highly sought-after operas. It was developed by Giuseppe Verdi into a classic Italian libretto by the talented Francesco Maria Piave. La Traviata is based on the 1852 play titled La Dame aux Camélias and adapted from a novel by Alexandre Dumas, fils. The literary meaning of La Traviata is "The Fallen Woman," and figuratively it means "The Woman Who Goes Astray." The show was originally titled after its main character, Violetta.
Set in 18th century Paris, La Traviata makes you think if a courtesan can ever find true love. If you see the play, your perception will surely change. This exciting story revolves around a Parisian courtesan whose life is full of ups and downs. After numerous random sexual encounters and flings, she meets a man and believes he is the man she could settle down with. But can the courtesan find true love or will they have a happy ending? La Traviata tells this story in such a way that you will fall in love with the show. Full of twists and turns and superb music, the show is sure to take your breath away.
The main character of the story, Violetta Valery, is not someone who can be easily entertained and pleased. Being a woman who has experienced a lot in a very short time, Violetta Valery wants to enjoy all the material pleasures of the world. But when she meets the handsome and dashing Alfredo, she starts doubting her goals of enjoying a lavish life in Paris. She is now confused and wondering if the love of Alfredo will be enough for her.
Verdi and Piave wanted to give a contemporary setting to the play by choosing Dumas, but on the insistence of La Fenice’s authorities, it was decided to be set in the era of c. 1700. Later on, in the 1880s, the librettists' and composers' original desires were approved and realistic productions were produced.
La Traviata was performed for the first time on March 6th, 1853 at La Fenice opera house of Venice. The play wasn’t too successful at first, but later on, after some revisions and changes, it was played in Venice during 1853 and 1854. Its performance at the Teatro San Benedetto became a critical hit, and the main reason for its fame was Maria Spezia-Aldighieri, who played the role of Violetta. There have been several films and other versions created on La Traviata, and all of them have been very successful.
La Traviata not only has a strong story but also a great deal of emotional appeal.
