Kevin Smith is an American standup comedian from Red Bank in New Jersey. He is also an actor, a director, a producer, a screenwriter, comic book writer and an author who has been active in the American entertainment industry since 1994. In the world of film, he is best known for playing the role of Silent Bob. As a director and producer, he is behind films such as View Askew, Cop Out and RedState. He is the co-founder of View Askew Productions, his production company, through which he releases his films. Kevin Smith was born to a postal worker and a homemaker and studied at the HenryHudsonRegionalHigh School. Kevin Smith then released his second movie, Mallrats, which was also a commercial success in the home video market. It was followed by what many regard as one of his best films to date, Chasing Amy. This film earned over twelve million dollars at the box office on a budget of just a quarter a million and was ranked as one of the best movies of the year by the critics. It also won not one but two Independent Spirit Awards. In 1996, he was hired to write a script for the Superman movie and is even featured on the animated movie, Superman: Doomsday released in 2007. He then worked on the movie Overnight Delivery, starring Reese Witherspoon.
In 1999, Kevin Smith released his fourth movie, Dogma which was a comedy starring Matt Damon and Ben Affleck. It earned thirty million dollars at the box office and premiered at the Cannes Film Festival that year. His next movie was Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back which starred two characters who had appeared in all of his previous movies. This movie also earned around thirty million dollars in the box office and also starred Ben Affleck and Matt Damon. His next movie was Jersey Girl starring Liv Tyler and Ben Affleck and it earned thirty six million dollars. In 2006, he released Clerks II and it won an MTV Movie Award and an award at the Edinburgh Film Festival. It was also premiered at the Cannes Film Festival and it starred Rosario Dawson and Jeff Anderson.
Kevin Smith then released the movie Zack and Miri Make a Porno in 2008 which was followed by Cop Out in 2010, starring Bruce Willis and Tracy Morgan. The same year, he began work on his next movie, RedState. This was a unique movie in that it was a horror film unlike his previous movies.
Aside from working on movies, Kevin Smith is also a renowned comic book writer known for his work on comics such as the Clerks comic, Daredevil comics, Spider-Man comics, Black Cat comics and Batman comis amongst many others.
