Before its success, Jesus Christ Superstar started out as an adventurous rock opera concept recording. The simple melody jotted down on a restaurant napkin on Fulham Road in London went on to become a phenomenon. The lyrics in the recording were by Tim Rice and the compositions by Andrew Lloyd Webber, both of whom got together to do this venture justice. According to them, when they started off, it was because no one wanted to do Jesus Christ Superstar as a stage production. The musical follows the last week of Jesus’ life, as mentioned in the Gospels, and leaves it in the hands of the viewer to decide his or her own opinion about the psychology of Jesus. Jesus Christ Superstar is conducted through the eyes of Judas Iscariot. The audience gets a moving look at the key events that occurred in the last week of Jesus’ life, including how his followers clung to his every word, and how his charisma posed a threat to the Ciaiphas’ and the Priests’ authority. Mary Magdalene’s character and the tentative relationship between her and Jesus is also explored.

The first act closes with a song titled ‘Damned for All Time/Blood Money’, as Judas tells the Priests that Jesus will be alone in the Garden of Gethsemane on Thursday night. He is aware of his betrayal but stays firm in his belief that what he is doing is for the best. The second act begins with ‘The Last Supper,’ where Jesus gathers his twelve apostles for the last supper. The second act is filled with emotional energy and the rock music that the opera uses as its medium fuels the powerful impact of the story.

The venture on a whole is an extremely interesting and thought-provoking one. The casting choices are sure to draw the attention of many fans of the associated bands. The role of Pondius Pilate is played by JC Chasez from ‘*NYSYNC’, Michelle Williams from ‘Destiny’s Child’ takes on the role of Mary Magdalene. Brandon Boyd, the vocalist of American rock band ‘Incubus’ is Judas Iscariot. Ben Forster will be acting in the role of Jesus Christ.
