The beautiful fairy-tale opera, written by the highly-talented nineteenth-century German composer Engelbert Humperdinck, who became legendary for his rendition of the famous Hansel and Gretel by the Grimm Brothers, had an emotionally powerful libretto penned by Humperdinck's sister, Adelheid Wette. Captivating with its significant focus on family values inspired by the composer's own closely-knitted family, the opera is usually performed near Christmas time, as it was originally conceived around the same time when Adelheid Wette approached her brother and told him about her enchanting songs, inspired by Hansel and Gretel, written for her children's puppet show on Christmas. She gave him the idea of writing accompanying music for these songs, thus giving birth to the musical brilliance of Hansel and Gretel. On 23rd December, 1983, the opera was performed for the first time in the city of Weimar, Germany, conducted under the expert guidance of Richard Strauss and was an instant success due to its originality and emphasis on German folk songs. The audience was mesmerized by the quality of the music inspired by Wagnerian techniques, making it one of the most famous classical operas. Its popularity is apparent from the fact that the Royal Opera House in London used it as their first complete radio broadcast in 1923.

The opera is a legendary tale of a brother and sister, Hansel and Gretel, facing hunger and their mother's wrath. Escaping to the forest with its mysteries and wild creatures, the opera tells of their survival through the night and their adventures. Eating berries and singing songs, the children come across the evil witch's home made of sweets. Normal curiosity inherent in young children, along with the extra attraction of treats, makes the children enter the house and get trapped. How they escape and the terror they encounter in the face of the evil, children-eating witch is the enthralling tale of Hansel and Gretel.

The significance of Hansel and Gretel mainly comes from its underlying story of the children left on their own to fight dangers using the simple but adorable intelligence of young children faced with difficulties. The most important point of the favorite fairy tale is that all is well that ends well. The children are reunited with their family after nights full of terror, but their spirits are not overshadowed by their past experiences and everyone is happy at the end. The happily ever after is a beautiful concept, and the audience eventually smiles after all the sadness. This makes the opera an inspiration for real life; it teaches us to face our problems with intelligence and hope for the best.

Nothing can be more eloquent than majestically performed music in telling this awe-inspiring tale of danger and a child-eating witch that ends with the death of the evil witch and the family reunion. Add to the gloriously rendered music the colorful, vibrant sets and amazing performances and you feel as if you have actually entered the world of fairy tales, where good always wins at the end and evil is always thwarted.

Imagine sitting in the plush seats of the theatre and watching this beloved tale unfold on the stage. The sets are elaborate, with the spotlights on the stage adding a magical feeling to the fantastic performances. Moreover, the latest technology has made the acoustics awe-inspiring; the audience does not miss the finest of nuances of the songs, even the sound of a pin falling down on the stage can be heard. The atmosphere at a live performance is incomparable, and no movie or soap coming on the television can beat the environment of a live opera. You feel at one with the performers; you cry when they cry, laugh when they laugh, and feel like dancing when they are dancing. Do not miss this opportunity and get your Hansel and Gretel tickets today and have a memorable day with your family.
