God of Carnage is the wonderful play by Yasmina Reza initially directed by Jurgen Gosch and performed on 8th December 2006 in Zurich. The English production came out on 25th March 2008 in London. The play opened in the West End in 2008 with Ralph Fiennes as Allain, Jannet Mc Teer as Veronique, Tamsin Greig as Annette and Ken Stott as Michel.
The English translation is done by Christopher Hampton though it was originally written in French language. The plot centers around two eleven year old boys were playing in the public park and how one of the boys hurts the other one. The parents of these naughty little children obviously get worried over their respective child's behavior and meet up one evening to discuss the whole issue in a very civilized manner. However, as the evening proceeds, the couples become engaged in a more and more chaotic situation, arguing like little children themselves. God of Carnage won several awards including the Laurence Olivier Award for best New Comedy; it also won the best play, Best Direction and Best Actress in a Play (for Marcia Gay Harden) at the 2009 Tony Awards.
God of Carnage is one of the seven plays written by Yasmina Reza, also being the last that she wrote. This delightfully talented lady has a long list of lengthy credits including her award nominated translation of Kafkas Metamorphosis for Roman Polanski and the globally successful play art. The play has four main characters called, Annette Reille, Alain Reille, Michel Vallon and Veronique Vallon. The original West End cast members included Tamsin Greig played the role of Annette, Ralph Fiennes as Alain Ken Scott who played Michel, and Janet McTeer who portrayed Veronique. The show received mostly warm and positive responses and reviews by the critics after its opening at London's West End.
God of Carnage is a comic tale of manners without the manners. And definitely the funniest and smartest evening on Broadway. Two eleven year olds are seen to be playing in a community park before the play officially commences. While these two kids are playing one of them called Ferdinand Reille hurts the other chap called Bruno Vallon, knocking two teeth out of his mouth with a stick. Alain is Ferdinand's father and is a lawyer by profession and his mother is a wealth manager. Brunos father is Michel, a wholesaler by profession and his mother Veronique, is a writer working on her book called Engulfing Darfur. As the evening proceeds the "civilized meeting" degenerates into an irrational argument based on topics of homophobia, racial prejudice and misogyny.
The crew and creative team of the play include Author, Yasmina Reza, translator Christopher Hampton director Mathew Warchus, designer Mark Thompson and music by Gary Yershon. The show has received warm reception in the theaters, positive reviews and many stars from the reviewers of The Guardian and The Times. This heartfelt comedy is a must-watch for all theater lovers as it is an infuriating comedy based around four couples quarrelling over childish and petty issues filling the show with nerve wrecking humor. Don't miss this wonderful theatrical and be sure to buy your God of Carnage tickets now before they all get sold out!
