Dreamgirls is a Broadway production whose music is given by the Academy Award nominee Henry Krieger and book and lyrics are by Grammy winning theatre director Tom Eyen. The musical first made its way to the public in 1981 when it was opened for a premier at the Imperial Theatre. It is based on the aspirations of show business and successes of Rhythm and Blues acts such as The Shirelles, The Supremes, Jackie Wilson, James Brown and many others. The musical follows the story of three young girls aspiring to be the R&B music superstars.

The musical revolves around "Dreamettes," a 1960s Supremes-style group and traces their emergence and rise followed by subsequent tribulations. Later, in the year 2006, it was also adopted into a musical drama film which was co-produced by Paramount Pictures and Dream Works.

This tale of three music divas full of hope as they take off on their journey from rags to riches is also a classic story of betrayal and rivalry. The cast of the musical consists of Effie Melody White, the group’s lead singer; her two best friends, Deena Jones and Lorrell Robinson and Effie’s brother named C.C. White who writes all of their songs. The roles are played respectively by Moya Angela, Syesha Mercado, Adrienne Warren and Trevon Davis.

The first act of the musical starts with an Amateur Night Talent competition hosted at the legendary Apollo Theatre in which Dreamettes perform "Move (You’re Steppin’ on My Heart)." Although the group fails to make a cut at this talent show, they meet Curtis Taylor after the show who becomes their manager and gets them a ten week touring gig with another rising artists, Jimmy Early. The group is later hired by Jimmy as backup singers and their first performance together is a big hit. But things start to take on a new turn when Effie and Curtis start dating each other.

Beginning in 1983, the Dreamgirls has been on a number of national US tours, hitting the stages at theatres like Ambassador Theatre, Apollo Theatre and many others. The musical was also premiered in South Africa and Malaysia in 2011. This year, Dreamgirls is again going to a number of cities across the nation.
