About Cirque Mechanics
Cirque Mechanics was created by Chris Lashua, a German Wheel artist and a Boston native. In 2004, shortly after the massive success of one of his earlier projects, Birdhouse Factory, Lashua decided to create what would become one of the most dynamic and innovative circus acts in the country.
How Cirque Mechanics Stands Out
Cirque Mechanics is a modern twist on the classic circus. It has its roots in mechanical innovation and technology which has always been at the heart of all of the tales concerning American ingenuity.
There is a raw quality to the show which features stark and vivid elements of realism. These are elements which aren’t common in many modern day circuses.
Cirque mechanics brings timeless, engaging, and relevant performances to the stage to really engage its audiences. Each story which is brought to life features both daring acrobatics as well as mechanical wonders. This is enough to leave audiences dazzle wherever the production goes.
The Birth of Cirque Mechanics
Chris Lashua, a German Wheel artist, was the brain child behind Cirque Mechanics. In 2002, along with Aloysia Gavre, Lashua began experimenting acrobatic performances using a new innovative aerial apparatus. What the two of them wanted to achieve was a way to showcase the complex and dynamic relationship between both the acrobatic and mechanical worlds. This apparatus would go on to serve as the inspiration for the development of further machines that would eventually be used in Cirque Mechanics productions.
In 2004, Lashua and Gavre joined a team which consisted of Sam Payne, Sandra Feusi, Steven Ragatz, and Rex Camphuis in order to collaborate on the 30th Anniversary production of the Pickle Family Circus. This circus was a production of the Circus Center of San Francisco. The year-end production which they worked on was called Birdhouse Factory and was a massive success.
After the success of this collaboration, Lashua decided that it was time to create a new type of circus which merged together the acrobatic and mechanical worlds. And that’s where Cirque Mechanics came into being.
What to Expect from the show
According to a review for Cirque Mechanics by the New York Times, the show is “Exceptional, evocative, eye-catching and engrossingly entertaining!”
Audiences can expect to witness a plethora of acrobats performing daring and mind-boggling feats, as well as unique machines and cyclists. All of the performers put on a spectacle that will leave you at a loss for words.
There is a massive metal powered apparatus at the heart of the show called the Gantry Bike. This large machine is the center piece from which funambulists and acrobats dangle and twirl in a spell-binding dance.
There are also flying unicycles and impressive trapeze artists that come in and out of the show. Their performance is reminiscent of the steampunk culture in which cycling was seen as the method by which one could escape a society which had become obsessed with technology.
Cirque Mechanics is a show which is full of thrills, excitement, nerves, and artistry. Experience what happens when man meets machine and the two decide to waltz.
