The circus has been an integral part of the entertainment industry for many years and was, at one point in time, one of the very few major leisure activities available to the public around the world. For a small entrance fee, people were able to see some of the most amazing feats of courage and dexterity, along with acts that would make them gasp, cheer, laugh and even cry. Audiences were given the opportunity to see rare animals from across the globe taking part in the performances, which consisted of colorful costumes, intricate chorography and original music.
The jump
Even though circuses have taken a back seat in recent years due to the rise of the television and film industry, there are still a few companies striving to return it to its former glory. Cirque du Soleil in particular has surpassed all expectations to become a global entertainment powerhouse through its use of original and moving storylines, which entrance audiences the world over. They have now performed in over two hundred and seventy cities around the world, in front over a whopping ninety million people and they are far from done yet. If you want to catch one of their spectacular shows for yourself, then here is the chance you have been waiting for. Just book your Cirque du Soleil Luzia tickets and enjoy the experience, live from the stands.
Cirque du Soleil was founded in 1984 by Gilles Ste-Croix and Guy Laliberté. Both men were accomplished performers who had a vision for a show that would provide wholesome family entertainment, as well as revive the stuttering circus industry. It took time and a lot of money, as they were beset with problems from the beginning; however none of these factors stopped them from following their dreams.
The flip
Guy Laliberté was an aspiring performance artist who wanted to make a name for himself. To that end, he dropped out of school at just the age of eighteen and started touring with a group of performers known as the ‘Les Échassiers.’ His time with them was quite a learning experience and he even managed to learn to breathe fire, which he later utilized as a street performer. The ‘Les Échassiers’ had primarily been the idea of Daniel Gauthier and Gilles Ste-Croix, a couple of performers who also managed a youth hostel for street performers. Together with Laliberté, they decided to bring all the tenants of the hostel together to form a performance troupe with whom they could tour around the country.
Even though they travelled and performed in quite a few cities, the business never really took off, and by 1980 it seemed it was only a matter of time before it would close down. However, their fortunes took a turn for the better soon after, and by 1981 they had recorded their first profit. Over the next few years they built up their reputation even further, and by 1983 they had received a grant of one and a half million dollars to put on a show for the four hundred and fiftieth anniversary celebration of the discovery of Canada by the French explorer Jacques Cartier. That is when they decided to rename their company and call it “Cirque du Soleil" or “circus of the sun.”
