Big Apple Circus is among the pioneers of one ring circus in America. Since their humble beginning in 1977 the circus has come a long way and has been responsible for bringing forth a number of other circus in the United States. Since then they have set examples for other kinds of circuses along with inspiring and training artists who have been performing in them for years.

The husband wife duo of Gregory Fedin who was born in Russia and raised in America and his wife Nina Krasavina came up with the idea of starting a circus that would train the future generations of circus. The couple started their training school in a Manhattan loft. The Big Apple Circus started in collaboration with Paul and Michael in 1977. The same year a venue was chosen for the circus in the city where the circus made its debut. The venue for the circus, Battery Park in New York and the circus itself made headline for presenting some of the interesting acts including jugglers, single and double trapezist, clowns, dog act among other performers. The next year the circus moved from the venue in Manhattan and in 1979 the couple managed to open two training schools with further collaborations. The next decade saw a tremendous media interest in the circus and which has remained with it even today. A special holiday celebration was also organized in the honor of the people from the circus. The same decade saw Big Apple Circus appearing in a Hollywood flick. In 1981 the circus moved to Lincon Center’s Damrosh Park which has been the regular venue for its winter performances. In the next two years it won a special prize while performing in Paris, France as well as earning the prestigious Obie Award. In 1984 the school moved to New Harlem where a new wave of passion started for young boys and girls who wanted to learn the circus art mostly to become potential circus performers in the future. The teachers and administration of the school focused on these students inculcating in them all the aspects of good circus performances and addressing their personal needs while honing their talent. Big Apple Circus is also accredited with one of the most innovative ideas in history – training clown doctors. As a part of the project professional clowns were trained in hospital and medical procedures. In 1989 the circus won the coveted prestigious crown in Monte Carlo in Morocco. In 1988 Big Apple Circus came in the limelight with its participation in the East Meets West collaboration between China and America. It was the first collaboration of its kind making the Big Apple Circus a pioneer. The same year the circus made its appearance in the Woody Allen film Alice. Another feather in its cap was added with exceeding the fund raising money from one million dollars. This money went into the construction and development of the Harlem Hospital Center where the clown doctors also do their performances for the patients. The circus also started ‘Art in Education’ program in 1996 which ran throughout the country. The purpose behind the program was to address lack of creativity in education and getting children in touch with their creative side while they are exploring themselves and receiving education. Big Apple Circus is far more than entertainment. It has proved to the world that every want of art is worthwhile and that every form can have a meaning beyond performing. This humanitarianism behind the circus also compelled HBO to make a documentary on all the aspects of the circus in the year 1991. The clown care and Art in Education programs are recognized unanimously as significant steps towards a sincere effort for social change. Since its inception the Big Apple Circus has brought many Hollywood stars and musicians who have performed under its brand. Big Apple Circus Tickets remain a good buy for the extravagant and innovative performances, true to the spirit of circus.

Healthy entertainment is as important for maintaining a healthy lifestyle as having a proper diet. When it comes to healthy and quality outdoor entertainment for the whole family, classic events like Big Apple Circus assume a very significant place among all others.

New York City based Big Apple Circus was founded in 1977, and is believed to be one of the important influences that made it possible to create very popular circuses including the Ringling Bros., Cirque du Soleil, Circus Flora and once functional Kaleidoscope. The circus initially started off as a small affair by Gregory Fedin and his wife Nina Krasavina who belonged to Russia. The venture was focused to train and promote young circus performers that would take this industry forward, and keep the art of circus alive. The couple started this institute at Lower Manhattan area in a loft.

The small venture expanded soon as the couple collaborated with Michael and Paul, who were renowned performers at that time, to initiate the project of Big Apple Circus at Manhattan. They deliberately adopted the style of a single ring circus where all the acts were performed at the same place, and an open ground was selected as the venue. Initially the Big Apple Circus was performed in a small green colored tent, where the founders along with some of their pioneer friends performed with immense enthusiasm and passion to make it a success. Selecting Battery Park of New York as their venue, some of the prominent performers at the Big Apple Circus included Ethel Jennier who performed the Dog Act, Paul Lubin who did the Single Trapeze, Michael and Paul who acted as clowns and jugglers, Mia and Jesse with their Double Trapeze Act, a tight wire performance and the Back Street Flyers. Owing to the great passion of these performers and good management of the show, Big Apple Circus became a commercial success within the first couple of years, and managed to move out of Manhattan in 1978. Just after two years of opening, the Big Apple Circus already had enough financial stability that it opened two schools dedicated towards education of circus arts among public.

With the passage of time the Big Apple Circus grew bigger in terms of both number of acts and the extent of publicity. More and more people came to know about it, manifesting into an ever increasing number of attendees every year. In early 1980s a special holiday was dedicated for the circus. The circus was also featured in a Hollywood movie in mid 1980s. Towards the later half of the decade, the Big Apple Circus had gone international, performing at Paris and other major cities of the world. Soon the institution further extended itself and became New York School of Circus Arts / Big Apple Circus, eventually moving to East Harlem. There, the school also started a project to promote circus arts among youth, and Young Talent Circus Training Program was established. By 1988, the institution and Circus was stable enough to try out new ventures, and in a program named East Meets West, the Big Apple Circus collaborated with circus companies in China to perform together at the Lincoln Center Damrosch Park where the Big Apple Circus regularly performs during winter season. The same year one of the major shareholders from Big Apple Circus, Mr. Paul Binder was awarded an honorary doctorate degree in Fine Arts by Dartmouth College as an acknowledgement of his services for promotion of arts.

The journey towards excellence and success continued in the subsequent decades, and in 1990s the Circus also founded a hospital named Harlem Hospital Center where specially trained clowns called the clown doctors always remained the major attraction in pediatrics department. The New York Landmarks Conservancy declared the major people behind all this success, Christensen and Binder as Living Landmarks. Their journey continues along with the ever increasing popularity of the Circus, and Big Apple Circus tickets would always be having high demand for the phenomenal work the team has always been doing in this form of art.
