Atlanta Ballet: The Nutcracker

The Nutcracker is a two-act ballet which is originally choreographed by Lev Ivanov and Marius Petipa. It is scored by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. The show's libretto is adapted from the story of E.T.A. Hoffmann titled 'The Nutcracker and the Mouse King.' The first performance of The Nutcracker was held in 1892 at the Imperial Mariinsky Theatre but did not receive much success. However, the show later started to gain some popularity when different choreographers started to present their version of The Nutcracker including Alexander Gorsky, Vasili Vainonen and Nicholas Sergeyev.

The ballet was first performed in the United States by the San Francisco Ballet in 1944. Directed by William Christensen, the show became a hit and soon started to get staged on every Christmas Eve. Since then, it has been performed by numerous ballet companies including the Atlanta Ballet. The Nutcracker has become so popular that even a film adaptation of the ballet was released by Disney in 2018.
