The Nutcracker: A Christmas Ballet in Wonderland
The scenes and sounds of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker are a staple to Christmastime all over the world. In the US especially, the classic ballet witnesses multiple productions and this time Southern California has gotten on The Nutcracker bandwagon. The American Ballet Theatre is bringing this timeless tradition to the Segerstrom Center for the Arts Costa Mesa, California and will be delighting audiences, leaving a legacy of wonder and joy.
The American Ballet Theatre premiered The Nutcracker in 2010 and re-imagined the beloved ballet making it more appealing to contemporary audiences. The improved take on this Christmastime treat has resulted in more audiences as the youngsters now join the adults in this tradition. The superb choreography by Alexei Ratmansky has turned the fantastical, formal and foreign production into something more realistic, relaxed and relevant. Despite the changes, the magic and mysteries of everyday life remain intact and add spice to the show.
A Christmas Standard
Set in 19th century, The Nutcracker ballet takes the audience to a holiday party and centers on a young girl Clara. Set to Tchaikovsky’s timeless music, the scene opens with Clara waiting for her godfather who always gives her the best gift. She gets a mysterious nutcracker soldier from him and at midnight some magical events unfold. Everything starts to get bigger – the Christmas tree, little mice and toy soldiers. And Clara’s beloved nutcracker comes to life. Like a hero he battles the Mouse King and when he’s about to lose, Clara steps in as the protagonist and distracts the King, saving her nutcracker. Just when you think the things are about to get normal, another twist comes and the nutcracker transforms into a handsome prince. He then takes Clara on a magical, adventurous journey. With her prince charming she explores the wondrous Land of Sweets and the glorious Sugarplum Fairy kingdom. Mixed with spectacular dancing, engaging sets and colorful costumes, The Nutcracker keeps the audience hooked with its humor, adventures and music.
ABT Presents a Spectacular Production
What sets apart American Ballet Theatre’s production from the others is Ratmansky’s obvious consideration to engage and involve all the audience members, including the curious children. His grandiose sense of storytelling makes the ABT’s version more of a comedy theatrical; whereas, the other productions focus on athletic feats and physicality. The American Ballet Theatre: The Nutcracker tickets will let you enjoy interesting characters like the little mouse who is also the first thing the audience identify with. The female ensemble of Snowflakes interweaves tight choreographed patterns and creates an ambiance that’s fun, kinetic and adventurous.
Dancing and choreography efforts have been upped as well, as the young cast presents incredible flow and eye-catching formations. They navigate the stage with professionalism and extreme precision, earning standing ovation several times during the ballet’s run. Poetry, meticulousness and power make up this extraordinary ballet and is a must watch this season.
