Notre Dame Fighting Irish Cities
The name "Notre Dame Fighting Irish" is inspired by the immigrant soldiers of Irish origin who took part in the Civil War as the Union's Irish Brigade. The poet Joyce Kilmer wrote about them in his poetry, as he himself was one of the soldiers serving in the Irish Brigade regiment during World War I. The University of Notre Dame took on the nickname of "Fighting Irish" during the time between the Civil War and World War II, as its third president, Fr. William Corby, was also a chaplain of the Irish Brigade. The mascot used by Notre Dame Fighting Irish teams is a leprechaun, and their colors are Madonna Blue and Gold. They also have a fight song for their teams called "Notre Dame Victory March". Different teams have their own home arenas; the football stadium is called Notre Dame Stadium, the Edmund P. Joyce Center is for basketball, and the baseball stadium is the Frank Eck Stadium. For their other sports, the Compton Family Center is used. Currently, the athletic director of the sports teams is Jack Swarbrick.
Most of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish teams are part of the Big East Conference, except for football, men's hockey, and women's and men's fencing. Its football team is Division I-A Independent, and its men's hockey team takes part in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association, while women's and men's fencing participates in the Midwest Fencing Conference.
