Overview

The venue for the Indianapolis 500, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, came into existence over a century ago in 1909. The idea to build a race track in the city was an idea of Carl Fisher, who procured a piece of land spanning over 328 acres to make the dream come true. The track was two and a half miles long and hosted its first race in 1909.  

Fisher and the people around him concluded that a single event was needed for the venue, which became the catalyst for the Indianapolis 500. On May 30, 1911, the inaugural edition of this legendary race was held, and it was a huge hit among motorsport enthusiasts. Ray Harroun came out on top in that first edition.   The race faltered in terms of attendance due to the arrival of the First World War.

Once that was done, the race resumed and started to gain popularity again. Many changes were made to the venue and the rules of the sport, adding to the excitement of what is now dubbed "The Greatest Spectacle in Racing."   Racers now drive a staggering 500 miles, which constitutes 200 laps around the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

The capacity of this astounding venue exceeds an incredible 250,000 in seating capacity alone, and with people watching from the infield, the number of people who can watch the Indianapolis 500 at a time goes up to 400,000. This makes it the biggest sports arena in the world.   There are three names at the top of the list of drivers with the most Indianapolis 500 wins: A.J. Foyt, Al Unser, and Rick Mears, all of whom have won it four times.

Penske Racing holds the record for most team titles with fifteen wins, and Dallara has ten chassis titles and Offenhauser has clinched the engine title twenty-seven times, both records.
