The WrestleMania History

WrestleMania is the premier annual professional wrestling event produced by World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE). It has been hailed as the Super Bowl of professional wrestling and is one of the most recognizable events in sports entertainment. The event began in 1985 and has since become an iconic annual tradition for both WWE fans and wrestling fans around the world.

Origins of WrestleMania

The first WrestleMania took place on March 31, 1985 at Madison Square Garden in New York City. The main event featured Hulk Hogan and Mr. T teaming up against "Rowdy" Roddy Piper and Paul Orndorff. This match was a huge success, drawing a crowd of over 19,000 people and becoming one of the highest grossing events in wrestling history. Following this success, Vince McMahon decided to make WrestleMania an annual pay-per-view event with special celebrity appearances each year.

Subsequent Events

Throughout its history, WrestleMania has featured many famous matches between some of the greatest wrestlers ever to compete in the ring. Some notable matches from over the years include: “The Rock vs Steve Austin” (1998), “Hulk Hogan vs Andre The Giant” (1987), “Bret Hart vs Shawn Michaels” (1997), “Undertaker vs Shawn Michaels” (2009) and “John Cena vs The Rock” (2012). Each year, WWE continues to produce new matches that help define what today's modern professional wrestling looks like.

Celebrity Appearances

Celebrities are also a big part of what makes Wrestlemania so popular amongst viewers all around the world. Notable celebrities who have made appearances at past events include: Snoop Dogg, Kid Rock, Mike Tyson, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Muhammad Ali, Floyd Mayweather Jr., Shaquille O'Neal and William Shatner. These celebrities often come out to support their favorite wrestlers or just provide a special moment to talk about their own experiences with wrestling or being part of this incredible culture that is pro-wrestling.

Special Moments

In addition to all its amazing matches and celebrity guests, many other moments have become iconic throughout Wrestlemania's storied history. Whether it be Ultimate Warrior sprinting his way down to ringside after winning his match or Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson uttering his famous catchphrase "If you smell what The Rock is cooking," these moments continue to make this show what it is today - an unforgettable experience for those lucky enough to attend live or watch from home on television.

The First WrestleMania

The first WrestleMania, often referred to as WrestleMania I, took place on March 31, 1985. It was an historic event that marked the beginning of a professional wrestling empire that would eventually become known around the world. The event drew more than 19,000 fans to Madison Square Garden in New York City and featured some of the biggest names in professional wrestling history.

Headlining the show were Hulk Hogan and Mr. T competing with Roddy Piper and Paul Orndorff for the WWF Tag Team Championship. Hogan and Mr. T's appearance was heavily promoted by their involvement in Sylvester Stallone's movie Rocky III which came out weeks earlier. They emerged victorious in a match that saw other WWF superstars such as "Rowdy" Roddy Piper, "Cowboy" Bob Orton Jr., André the Giant, and Jimmy Snuka all participate.

Other high-profile events included a 20-man battle royal involving wrestlers from both NWA and AWA promotions; Wendi Richter defeating Leilani Kai for the WWF Women’s Title; Tito Santana defeating The Executioner to retain his Intercontinental Championship; Greg Valentine and Brutus Beefcake defeating The Dream Team (Johnny Valiant and Randy Savage) to win the Tag Team Championship; and Junkyard Dog defeating Intercontinental Champion Greg Valentine by disqualification in a non-title match.

The show closed with Hulk Hogan pinning Roddy Piper after Jessie Ventura counted a three count despite interference from Bob Orton Jr., cementing Hogan's status as one of the most iconic figures in WWE history up until this day. Overall, WrestleMania I set a precedent for professional wrestling spectacles that would be built upon for decades to come - it was an event like no other at its time and is looked back on as one of the most important days in sports entertainment lore.

The 5 Greatest Moments in WrestleMania History

WrestleMania is the biggest annual professional wrestling event in the world, and has been taking place since 1985. It is a spectacle of sports entertainment that is attended by millions of fans around the globe every year. Throughout its history, there have been some truly remarkable moments at WrestleMania that will forever be remembered as among the greatest in wrestling history. Here are five of those iconic moments:

The Ultimate Warrior’s Victory over Hulk Hogan at WrestleMania VI (1990): The Ultimate Warrior and Hulk Hogan were two of the most popular wrestlers of their era, and their match at WrestleMania VI was a much-hyped main event. After an epic battle, it was The Ultimate Warrior who emerged victorious, claiming the WWE Championship belt in what would be one of the most memorable matches in WrestleMania history.

Stone Cold Steve Austin Defeating Shawn Michaels to Win His First WWE Title at WrestleMania XIV (1998): Stone Cold Steve Austin had risen to immense popularity in 1998 as part of his feud with WWE Chairman Vince McMahon, and his match against Shawn Michaels for the WWE Championship was highly anticipated. After a back-and-forth match, Austin eventually pinned Michaels for the three count to become WWF Champion for the first time.

"The Montreal Screwjob" between Bret Hart and Shawn Michaels at WrestleMania 13 (1997): In 1997, Bret Hart and Shawn Michaels had one of the most storied feuds ever seen in professional wrestling when they faced off in a submission match at WrestleMania 13. Despite Hart’s best efforts to fight off Michaels’ submission holds, he eventually “tapped out” after being caught in Michaels’ famous finisher—the “Sharpshooter”—leading to one of wrestling’s most infamous moments known as “The Montreal Screwjob.”

Edge Winning Money in the Bank Ladder Match at WrestleMania 21 (2005): Edge made his debut on SmackDown! as part of a tag team called Rated RKO alongside Randy Orton, but it wasn't until he won Money in The Bank Ladder Match at Wrestlemania 21 that he became a star on his own right. The ladder match saw Edge climb atop a massive ladder to grab hold of a briefcase suspended above the ring; this win would set him up for multiple World Championships down the line, making it one of Edge's greatest accomplishments yet.

John Cena Defeating John ‘Bradshaw" Layfield For The WWE Title At Wrestlemania 21 (2005): John Cena began his career with WWE as an unknown rapper from West Newbury, Massachusetts; however, by 2005 he had become one of the company's top stars. At Wrestlemania 21 , Cena squared off against veteran wrestler John 'Bradshaw' Layfield for the World Wrestling Entertainment Heavyweight Championship. After an intense back-and-forth match, Cena emerged triumphant with his first WWE Championship victory. This moment marked not only Cena's first title win but also cemented his status as an iconic superstar within professional wrestling.

The 7 Greatest Superstars in WrestleMania History

The Undertaker: Known as the Phenom, The Deadman and The Demon of Death Valley, The Undertaker has been a staple of WrestleMania since his debut in 1991 at WrestleMania VII. He holds the record for most WrestleMania appearances with 24, including 21 consecutive appearances from 1991-2011.

He holds numerous records, such as the longest winning streak in WrestleMania history with 21 straight victories from Mania VII in 1991 to WrestleMania XXX in 2014. His iconic entrance alone is enough to send chills down spines of all wrestling fans across the world.

Stone Cold Steve Austin: Austin was one of the biggest stars during the Attitude Era and is widely regarded as one of the greatest superstars in wrestling history. He had several classic rivalries throughout his career which included memorable matches at multiple WrestleManias.

He also had memorable matches against The Rock, Triple H and Vince McMahon among others that cemented his legacy as one of the all-time greats at Mania.

Hulk Hogan: Hogan is often referred to as “the greatest wrestler ever” and it’s easy to see why, given his success both inside and outside of the ring over a span that lasted decades. He was known for his colorful entrances and charismatic promos which helped him become an icon among wrestling fans around the world. His marquee matches include iconic main events against Randy Savage (Wrestlemania V) and Andre The Giant (Wrestlemania III), two bouts that are considered classics today and helped propel Hogan into stardom.

John Cena: Cena made his debut on WWE programming back in 2002 but it wasn't until 2004 when he became a megastar after defeating JBL for the WWE Championship at WrestleMania XXI which earned him global recognition from casual fans and hardcore wrestling enthusiasts alike.

Since then, he's competed successfully in many other classic bouts held on Manias such as those against Shawn Michaels (Wrestlemania 23), CM Punk (Wrestlemania 29) and AJ Styles (Wrestlemania 32). No matter what you think about him now, there's no doubt Cena will go down in history as one of the best wrestlers to ever grace this event with his presence.

Shawn Michaels: ‘The Heartbreak Kid’ truly lived up to his nickname while becoming a cornerstone of WWE programming throughout much of 1996 - 2009 period where he won numerous championships including four World Heavyweight Championships during this time frame alone; three within six years between 1997 - 2003 which remains an impressive feat even today!

He had some classic battles at multiple Manias like against Bret Hart at Wrestling Mania XII or Chris Jericho at Wrestlemaina XIX amongst others; earning himself a reputation as being ‘Mr. Wrestlemaina’ due to such accomplishments!

The Rock: One could make an argument that Dwayne Johnson refers more affectionately known by The Rock nickname has become more famous outside professional wrestling than inside it - something almost unheard off for any wrestler before him! Not only he was able singlehandedly change how millions view pro-wrestling but also had several classic wrestle mania moments like 'iconic' Rock vs Hulk Hogan bout at Wrestlemaina XVIII or taunting John Cena before their match up at Wrestling Mania XXVIII!

Triple H: Triple H debuted during mid 90's under DX faction alongside Shawn Michaels & Chyna but later became one of most dominant champions in WWE history during 2000's Era where he helmed Evolution faction; holding multiple titles & engaging feuds with numerous superstars like Mick Foley, Chris Benoit & Ric Flair etc! Most recently however he reunited DX faction alongside Shawn Michaels once again showing why he was once labelled "the Cerebral Assassin" thanks to ability blend old school technicality with modern era high flying antics!
