Washington Mystics are a basketball team that plays from the WNBA as a part of its Eastern Conference. Founded just before the 1998 season, the Mystics are currently under the ownership of Monumental Sports and Entertainment, which is also known to own the team’s counterpart, Washington Wizards. The Mystics have entered the WNBA playoffs six times since playing in Washington. They are known to have given rise to some of the biggest basketball acts like Tennessee exception Chamique Holdsclaw, Maryland Player Crystal Langhorne, and shooting guard Alana Beard. Though the team has had quite a talented roster, they have yet to make it to the WNBA finals, and have only qualified for the Conference Final once in 2002, in which they lost to New York. The team’s popularity however, continues to increase making Washington Mystics tickets a very sought-after treat among women’s football fans.
Washington Mystics are among the earliest WNBA expansion franchises that made the worst WNBA record in their first season while they were still being led by Nikki McCray. Though the team did not succeed in making it to the playoffs that season, they were still expected to do much better following the drafting of Chamique Holdsclaw in 1999. With her addition in the team, the Mystics certainly improved but were still unable to enter the playoffs until 2000, when they played against New York Liberty. In the 2005 season, the team underwent several changes in its organization including their previous star Holdclaw leaving to join the Los Angeles Sparks. Soon the team was sold to Lincoln Holdings LLC under Ted Leonsis. That year, the Mystics completed their regular season with close loss-and-win record, and yet again failed to reach the playoffs. In 2006, the team began doing well under their new star guard Alana Beard drafted two years earlier. They continue to play in red, white, gray and blue jerseys with Pax as their mascot.
Washington Mystics have had the highest attendance records among other teams of the WNBA, between 1998 and 2000, and through 2002 to 2004. As a way of celebrating the huge number of fans showing up for their games, they hung as many as six banners in the Verizon Center. However, due to surrounding controversy and in order to allow the hanging of other team’s banners, in 2011 the Mystics only had three attendance banners in the stadium. During the 2009 season, the team yet again topped all attendance records among WNBA teams with an attendance of more than eleven thousand three hundred per game. Some of the players from their roster include Jasmine Thomas, Noelle Quinn, Crystal Langhorne, Shannon Bobbitt, Monique Currie, Matee Ajavon and Michelle Snow, among others. Some of their former players are Katie Smith, Nakie Sanford, Murriel Page, Coco Miller, Chasity Melvin, Asjha Jones, Lindsey Harding, Marissa Coleman, Vicky Bullett, Kiesha Brown, Taj McWilliams-Franklin, and DeLisha Milton-Jones. Grab Washington Mystics tickets and be there to cheer for the unstoppable players while they throw one goal after another.
