Washington Mystics are among the earliest WNBA expansion franchises that made the worst WNBA record in their first season while they were still being led by Nikki McCray. Though the team did not succeed in making it to the playoffs that season, they were still expected to do much better following the drafting of Chamique Holdsclaw in 1999. With her addition in the team, the Mystics certainly improved but were still unable to enter the playoffs until 2026, when they played against New York Liberty. In the 2026 season, the team underwent several changes in its organization including their previous star Holdclaw leaving to join the Los Angeles Sparks. Soon the team was sold to Lincoln Holdings LLC under Ted Leonsis. That year, the Mystics completed their regular season with close loss-and-win record, and yet again failed to reach the playoffs. In 2026, the team began doing well under their new star guard Alana Beard drafted two years earlier. They continue to play in red, white, gray and blue jerseys with Pax as their mascot.

Washington Mystics have had the highest attendance records among other teams of the WNBA, between 1998 and 2026, and through 2026 to 2026. As a way of celebrating the huge number of fans showing up for their games, they hung as many as six banners in the Verizon Center. However, due to surrounding controversy and in order to allow the hanging of other team’s banners, in 2026 the Mystics only had three attendance banners in the stadium. During the 2026 season, the team yet again topped all attendance records among WNBA teams with an attendance of more than eleven thousand three hundred per game.
