The tournament incorporated a round-robin group phase when it expanded in the 1990s, and more teams were also inducted. Currently, up to four teams are now provided for the competition by Europe's strongest national leagues. The tournament is a different entity than the UEFA Europa League that has been previously known as the UEFA Cup. The tournament commences in mid-July with a play-off round and three knockout qualifying rounds. A group stage is arrived where the 10 surviving teams are included in the 22 seeded teams. The stage comprises of eight groups with four teams each.
In the final knockout phase which winds up with the final match in May, eight group winners and eight runners-up participate. No successive wins have been achieved by any club as the event's name and structure was revised in 1992. The team that wins the UEFA Champions League Final thus proceeds to the FIFA Club World Cup as well as the UEFA Super Cup. As of now, 21 different clubs have won the title, out of which 12 have achieved victory more than once. Real Madrid holds the all-time record by winning nine championship titles, which includes the initial five seasons it has been contested. The most successful club has been however Spain's La Liga with 12 wins under its wings.
England and Italy have secured 11 wins between four and three clubs respectively. Due to the events at Heysel in 1985, English teams were not allowed to compete in the tournament for five years. The current champion is Barcelona with its win in the 2008-09 final by defeating Manchester United. It was French sports editor and journalist L'Equipe Gabriel Hanot who conceived the idea of Champions League Final tournament which was initiated in 1955. He was inspired by the highly popular Campeonato Sudamericano de Campeones of 1948. The idea behind the event was to organize a competition for the champions of the European national football leagues.
A two-leg knockout format was used when the tournament started in 1955-56. The teams had to play two matches, one away and one at home. That team succeeded to the next round of the tournament with the highest overall qualifying score. Only the teams winning their national league championships were entitled to enter the championship till 1992. This also held true for the current European Cup holder. The tournament's format was revised in the 1992-93 season, and it was renamed the UEFA Champions League besides including a group stage. The eligibility criteria since then has met with numerous modifications apart from the changes in group structure and qualifying rounds. Runners-up from some countries were also considered eligible to participate in the tournament starting 1997-98. The wining team in the tournament was entitled to participate in the now defunct Intercontinental Cup between 1960 and 2004. The practice of the winner being eligible for the FIFA-organised Club World Cup also originated then.
