Liverpool FC was founded in 1982 by John Houlding and became a member of Britain’s football league the following year. Anfield was chosen as the club’s home stadium, after its previous tenants, Everton FC moved to Goodison Park. The club has remained at Anfield ever since.
In its debut season, the club won their first silverware, the Lancashire League, which was a stepping stone to get into the Football League. The club became members of the Football League Second Division at the beginning of the 1893-1894 season, and after finishing third got promoted to the First Division.
The team won the first of their eighteen top-flight titles in 1901. In the following years the team was a regular contender for the title and had won four titles by 1923. A period of relative obscurity followed for the club in which they were able to win only one title in forty years.
Legendary manager Bill Shankly’s appointment as manager in 1959 heralded a new age for Liverpool. The Scotsman revamped the whole structure of the club and ushered in a new group of players. Along with this assistant Bob Paisley, Shankly led the club to three league titles, two FA Cups and one UEFA Cup.
Upon Shankly’s retirement in 1974, Bob Paisley became the new manager of Liverpool. The former player, coach, physiotherapist and now manager had spent almost forty years with the club and helped them achieve unprecedented success during his tenure. He won six league titles, three League Cups, three European Cups (the most by one manager), one UEFA Cup and one UEFA Super Cup.
The 1970’s and 1980’s were undoubtedly the golden period for Liverpool FC. During the tenures of Liverpool’s two most loved coaches, the club won eleven league titles and seven European trophies and became the most dominant soccer club in the world.
The 1990’s and 2000’s were comparatively disappointing decades for the club as they saw the rise of their arch rivals, Manchester United. The club has been unable to win a league title since they last won it in 1990 under Kenny Dalglish’s tenure. However, during this period Liverpool was once again crowned champions of Europe, when they defeated AC Milan in a nail biting thriller during the 2005 Champions League final.
Liverpool is one of the most decorated clubs in English soccer. Their five European crowns are the highest won by an English club and their eighteen league titles are only second to Manchester United’s twenty. As one of the most supported clubs in world soccer, Liverpool FC tours extensively every preseason to play live games in front of its fans all over the world. Liverpool FC tickets will allow you catch “The Reds” live in action, as they play against some of the best teams out there and showcase why they are one of the best soccer clubs in the world.
