The football team from the University of Connecticut has been active for 118 years. It was founded in 1896. The university was named Storrs Agricultural College at the time. The team was initially named the Aggies and joined the Athletic League. In its first year it had playoffs against YMCA clubs and local schools. It was in 1897 that the team played against the Athletic League rivals from Rhode Island and Yale University; the rivalry with whom had been going strong for over hundred years.
