ECHL hockey franchise Toledo Walleye was incepted in 1991 and were called the Toledo Storm back then. They were the city's first hockey side after the Toledo Goaldiggers of the IHL moved to Kansas City in the year 1990.
In their first season, the Storm clinched the division title as well as the Henry Brabham Cup. The following year brought the team’s first Jack Riley Cup win after they prevailed over the Wheeling Thunderbirds in 6 games. More success followed as the Storm won a second straight Riley Cup after getting the better of the Raleigh Icecaps in 5 games.
With this win, the Storm became only the second team in the league' history to secure back-to-back league titles. The initial years of the Storm’s existence were quite successful as they were crowned Division Champions in four of their first five seasons and also posted winning records in 13 of their first 16 seasons of play. A second Brabham Cup victory followed in 2003 before an appearance in the American Conference Finals during the 2005-06 campaign.
Toledo Arena Sports Inc. acquired the franchise in the year 2007 and started work on building a new state-of-the-art sports stadium in downtown Toledo. Once that was completed and the team moved to the new place for their home games, they were renamed as the Toledo Walleye in 2009.
