The total 17 Red Raiders teams include the , basketball, soccer, baseball, golf, tennis, track, football, and field (both outdoor and indoor), swimming, diving and cross country whereas the Lady Raider teams include tennis, basketball, volleyball, cross country, soccer, track and field (outdoor and indoor), swimming, rowing and diving. Many of the fans of the Red Raiders do not know the interesting story behind the teams' new name. The Raiders were previously called the Matadors which was an attempt to pay tribute to the Spanish Renaissance architecture. When the varsity students began wearing black and red but sometime later, the football coach requested an 'attractive' scarlet uniform for the varsity football team. When the team played its first match wearing the new uniform, an LA writer called the Matadors a 'red raiding team'. Other reporters too actively began using this and thus the Matadors became the Texas Tech Red Raiders.
The Red Raiders have performed brilliantly over the years. Part of the reason for their great performances is because of the fact that they hire the best coaches. Take the example of Larry Hays, who was the coach of the Red Raiders Football team till 2008. He has a glorious career as a coach and is one of the only four coaches in the history of National Collegiate Athletic Association to have produced more than fifteen hundred victories in his career. Dan Spencer is the new baseball coach who has been hired after Hays retirement. Kristy Curry is another example of hiring the absolute best. She got appointed as the head coach after the retirement of Marsha Sharp.
Almost all Red Raider teams have performed brilliantly in different tournaments but unfortunately, they have only gotten a single national championship trophy to their name. That was when the Lady Raiders, a name given to the women basketball team, won the much coveted national championship trophy in 1993. No other Red Raiders team has been able to grab a national trophy for the varsity but nevertheless, they have had their fair share of glory at the conference level. The Men's Basketball team has been outstanding over the years as they have many magnificent seasons and tournaments in the past. The varsity has won a total of thirty seven conference championships and whenever they win, there is always the mascot to cheer!
The Texas Tech Red Raiders have two mascots. One is the Masked Raider, which is the varsity's version of the Mask of Zorro. It is one of the oldest mascots of any varsity that still exists today. It was originally referred to as the Ghost Rider when it first appeared, unofficially, in the mid 1930s in a few of the varsity games. The image quickly grew popular with the students with his 'gun's up' hand gesture. Raider Red is the other mascot of the varsity, who takes the place of The Masked Raider, when he is unavailable. No matter who the mascots are, whenever the team goes head to head against their rivals such as the Texan Longhorns or the Texas A & M Aggies, it is worth watching.
