The Texas Tech Red Raiders are the proud representatives of the Texas Tech University (TTU) in NCAA football. They are members of the Big 12 Conference of the NCAA Division-I FBS (Football Bowl Subdivision). Upon inception, the team was known as the “Matadors” as a reference to the abundant Spanish Renaissance architecture on the TTU campus. In 1937, the name was changed to the “Red Raiders” which was originally a nickname used by a sportswriter.
