The Texas Tech Red Raiders are the proud representatives of the Texas Tech University (TTU) in NCAA football. They are members of the Big 12 Conference of the NCAA Division-I FBS (Football Bowl Subdivision). The Texas Tech University initiated its football program back in 1925 and boasts of an impressive overall winning record.
Upon inception, the team was known as the “Matadors” as a reference to the abundant Spanish Renaissance architecture on the TTU campus. In 1937, the name was changed to the “Red Raiders” which was originally a nickname used by a sportswriter.
This change of name brought an immediate change in fortunes as the Red Raiders won their first conference title that same year. As a result, they were invited to play in the Sun Bowl, one of the oldest college football bowl games in the country.
The Texas Tech Red Raiders have significant rivalries with the Texas A&M Aggies (Texas A&M University), the Baylor Bears (Baylor University), the Oklahoma State Cowboys (Oklahoma State University) and the TCU Horned Frogs (Texas Christian University).
