The Tennessee Volunteers are the college sports team at the University of Tennessee. Established in 1794, the University of Tennessee is a public university located in Knoxville and is distinct from other competitive universities in the United States in many ways. It has separate athletic departments for both men's and women's sports, with the men's teams known as the Volunteers and the women's teams known as the Lady Volunteers. Both departments operate independently. The University of Tennessee was ranked as one of the top universities in the United States in 2010. The athletic department includes baseball, basketball, football, golf, soccer, softball, swimming, diving, volleyball, tennis, and several other sports. Tennessee Volunteers tickets for all of these games remain in high demand throughout the year.

Each sport game is supported by the crowd and becomes an event in itself, with the university's marching band being a source of pride and recognition. At the beginning of every game, a march to the stadium and a salute to the hill make the team stand out in the eyes of sports fans, paying tribute to the history and the university. Neyland Stadium is the football stadium for the Tennessee Volunteers, where they play surrounded by thousands of enthusiastic spectators. The "Opening of the T" is one of the most famous acts by any football team.
