Texas Christian University (TCU) has prepared approximately eighteen athletic teams to represent the university in various sports. TCU's mascot is the Horned Frog. The first reference to this mascot is attributed to the AddRan yearbook in 1897, after which it was adopted by TCU formally. The teams involved in TCU's sports participate in tournaments held by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). Therefore, the TCU Horned Frog is a platform which helps to build recognition for the university and earns a name for the specific institute it represents. It conducts sports from universities all over the United States and Canada. The games played include football, baseball, basketball, volleyball, golf, soccer, swimming, tennis, and rifle. TCU has plans to move to the Big East Conference in the coming months.
Of the sports TCU has ventured into over the years, there are a number of accomplishments to be mentioned. These successes are endorsed by both male and female players since the sports are held at the same scale for them. A little insight into the games played reveals the accomplishments associated with each game. The revival of the game of football rose in 1998. In its 67-year tenure, TCU Horned Frogs have won six Southwest Conference titles and made eleven bowl game appearances, though winning only one. Since then, the numbers have accelerated in the realm of the football season. They have stood victorious in two National Championships as well. Male and female golf teams are playing their own role in bringing fame to TCU Horned Frogs. Men have been qualified to exhibit their talent in two NCAA Championships so far and the women's team is definitely not far behind.
Apart from this, TCU has been triumphant in various other tournaments such as swimming and diving and has often qualified to enter into the championships. The women's soccer team has also contributed to the university's success and was honored with the title of "Best Sports Team" nationwide in 2007. The team plays its home games at Garvey Rosenthal Stadium, which accommodates approximately 1,500 people. TCU Horned Frogs have such a huge fan-base that their encounter with the University of Southern California in the 2010 fall season saw an attendance of almost 2,300. Besides being placed among the top teams in soccer, the volleyball team has also made its mark in the sport. The team has been making records for three consecutive seasons, their best statistics being 20-11. The home games are conducted at the Student Recreation Center. The sport which shows the most fluctuations in bringing in success is the basketball team, which often gives a close call, thrilling the audience every time.
The team members to whom the football victories can be attributed include sensational players like Rags Mathews, Sammy Baugh, and Davey O’Brien. These players have performed under the leadership of experienced coaches, such as Matty Bell, Abe Martin, and Garry Peterson. Experienced coaches, skilled in their respective games, are assigned to every sport. For golf, it's Bill Montigel and Angie Ravaioli-Larkin; for soccer, it's Mark Plakorous; Dutch Mayer for baseball; and Buster Brannon for basketball.
The eminence brought to TCU Horned Frogs in the form of awards can be attributed to the game of baseball. It managed to bring in 23 All-American awards, 3 Players of the Year awards, 6 Freshman awards, and a number of All-Conference Selections.
Since TCU offers a variety of sports, it attracts a diverse set of audiences. TCU Horned Frogs arranges entertainment for all sport lovers.
