Origins
The franchise was established in 1932 as the Boston Braves. The team was based in Boston and was owned by George Preston Marshall. In 1933, while the team remained in Boston, its name was changed to the Boston Commanders. Football, however, hadn’t established roots in the Boston area at that time and therefore the Boston Commanders weren’t a profitable franchise and hence the team moved to the nation’s capital in 1937.
The move turned out to be lucky as the team won its first NFL Championship in 1937. They would win another in 1942, but would remain unnoticeable from 1946 to 1970. The Washington Commanders were a whole different team during the 1970’s. While they lost the Super Bowl in 1972, they kept playing exceptional football and made it to 5 postseasons during the decade. However, their best was yet to come.
Glorious Seasons
From 1982-1991, the Washington Commanders were a remarkable team. They played the type of football which would later become stuff of legends. Most of the players, who played with the team during this time, would become Hall of Famers.
In 1982, the Washington Commanders played in Super Bowl XVII and defeated the Miami Dolphins to win their first Super Bowl. The following season saw the team once again reach the Super Bowl, however they lost to the Raiders.
In 1987, the Commanders once again lifted the Vince Lombardi Trophy after defeating the Broncos 42-10 in Super Bowl XXII. History would repeat itself yet again for the third time in Minneapolis, Minnesota, where Super Bowl XXVI was played in 1992. The Washington Commanders defeated the Buffalo Bills and won their third Super Bowl Championship. Since their last appearance, the Commanders have been unable to reach the Super Bowl.
The Washington Commanders Championships
The Washington Commanders have won the following titles till now:

Super Bowl – 3.

The Philadelphia Eagles
The Commanders also have a rivalry with the Eagles. They met for the first time on October 21, 1934 with the Commanders winning the game 6-0. As of As of September 23, 2022, these two sides have met in a total of 113 regular season games during the Super Bowl era. The Commanders lead the head-to-head record 57-53-3.
