Before the year 1994, the nickname of this program used to be the St. John's Redmen. This was a reference to the uniforms which the teams wore in the event, which were red in color. This nickname's interpretation was taken as a reference to Native Americans, mainly due to the fact that their mascot also wore a Native American dress. That is the main reason why the University had to change the name of the athletic program from the Redmen to the St. John's Red Storm. Around this time, several universities and colleges had to change the names of their teams due to the mounting sensitivity of Native Americans. The old name Redmen, however, is still used by old fans of the event. On the 18th of September, 2009, a new mascot was chosen for the event. It was called the Thunderbird.

 

Out of all sports events that take place in college athletics, the St. John's basketball program is the seventh most winning one ever, with a total of 1686 wins. The university also has the record for being the seventh most appeared teams in NCAA tournament history, with twenty-seven total appearances. Not only that, but they also have six Basketball Hall of Fame members, two players who have won the Wooden National Player of the Year Awards and eleven consensus All-Americans. The program also has fifty-nine athletes which have been sent to the National Basketball Association. The home arena of the Red Storm basketball team is often referred to as "The World's Most Famous Arena", namely the Madison Square Garden.

 

Soccer is also one of the most popular sports of the program, and the St. John's soccer team has made fifteen consecutive appearances in NCAA tournaments. The team has managed to gain victory is eleven Big East Championships. The team also emerged victorious in the NCAA National Championship in the year 1996. They play their home games at the Belson Stadium, which is located inside the university. In the year 2006, the team was called for a game in Vietnam, making them the 1st soccer team in the United States to achieve this honor.

 

The university's baseball team is no less popular, with twenty-six participations in NCAA, six appearances in the College World Series and six Big East Championship games. The team has also produced seventy professional baseball athletes. The first game of the team took place on the 29th of March, 2009, at Citi Field. Their home arena is the Jack Kaiser Stadium, which is a state of the art stadium, housing all modern facilities.

 

The fencing program of the university is also extremely popular with the audience, producing athletes the likes of Ivan Lee and Keeth Smart, both of whom have been to the Olympics. The team has also gained victory in the Fencing Championship of NCAA in the year 2001, and is included in the top five fencing teams of the past decade. The athletes of the team also have 13 Individual titles in NCAA championship games apart from team wins.
